I've had this gun a couple years. It has plenty of hammer, the springs are fine, but it misfires about 40% of the time--no matter what ammo I use. The misfires seem to have sufficient dents from the hammer and the cylinder shows no indication of excessive dry firing. Regardless, I'm beginning to think that the striker on the hammer is worn down just a hair or mis-milled just enough to make a difference.
I'm considering buying a new hammer, but before I do that, I'm thinking that taking a small center punch to the flat side of the current striker might spread the metal enough to fix the misfires. Any thoughts?

Excessive endshake is not desirable in a revolver and can lead to misfires. Excessive endshake in a wife may or may not be desirable, depending on how much there is to shake, and can lead to either misfires or premature firing.
Your mileage may vary.

Hey Buff -
Do you have a Model 929 with the swing-out cylinder? OR do you have a 999 SPORTSMAN with the hinged frame? It does make a difference. Your wife must come in handy when the paint needs shaking.

Have you tried the "old lock-up test?" Pull trigger all the way through lock release, hold trigger back and then check for end shake. Try: tightening the crane screw, tightening the ejector rod in cylinder bushing - if no help - may need shim or cylinder lock bolt and/or lock bolt cutouts are worn????
