Citadel or Rock Island 1911 for the .45 and used Glock 17/19/26 or Taurus PT 111 for the 9mm.
All are between $350 and $500.

Taurus, Ruger, and Bersa all make good, reliable pistols at a value price. Hi-Point makes solid, reliable guns at a barebones price, but they are big, ugly, and not my particular preference.
You will also likely have good luck on the used market. Glocks, SIGs, and others that have been used by police forces are usually a good value for your dollars.

there are a couple 1911s that are great guns for around $500 or a little less. i really like the glocks next to the 1911. glocks aren't very expensive either.

Baby desert eagle. Consider a .40? It is the best feel of any gun I have ever put in my hand. Extended slide release, hammer drop safety. Look at the full size mdls.

Star in Spain has made some good single-action 9mm pistols over the years. Used ones sell for $300 or less. Quite reliable guns.

I think Ruger still makes the .45 in model p90 & p345, and they have some decent 9mm models too.... p89, p93, p91, and the polymer one. Or maybe a good used sig or beretta or CZ 75-that's a nice pistol too. Lots of stuff out there.

Ruger autos are affordable, shoot well and are very rugged and reliable. If cost is the primary consideration, I would definitely choose Ruger. They are not as pretty or as smooth, but will never let you down.

I'll second the Ruger P series with the exception of the P345. I have heard both good and bad about the P345 so buyer beware.

cheaperthandirt.com You will need a permit to purchase as all guns need to be sent to a FFL lic holder and then that holder will usually charge 20 to 25 bucks handling fee. Last edited by dbltap; 02-15-2010 at 06:33 PM.. Reason: more info |
