lohki13,

Federal Firearms License, this is the license dealers need.

Keep asking the questions.

Just wondering what it was because sites that sell guns say you need one to order guns.

A FFl is a Federal Firearms License. This is a license you need to deal in firearms in the United States. A C&R license is a Curio & Relic License. This license enables you to collect weapons on the BATFE list or weapons over 50 years old. BATFE is the Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco,Firearms, and Explosives. The "E" was added after 9-11. A C&R does not enable you to deal in firearms. A full fledged FFL may deal in firearms nation wide and locally. There are classses of FFl's and not all FFL's may buy, sell,or have full auto-matic weapons "ie" machine-guns. All full automatic weapons or machine gun owners must have a special FFL to own such and a special tax permit or transfer permit.

You can purchase a gun without having a FFL, but you can't receive shipment without one. So if you buy a gun at an online auction, for example, you will have to make arrangements with someone who has a FFL to receive the shipment. They will then file the appropriate paperwork to transfer the gun to you. They usually charge a fee for this service.

All this is subject to the laws of your state, of course.

Uh, duh, that wouldn't be "congress" by any chance, would it John?

Bruce, those above answered your basic question quite accurately about an FFL. Keep in mind also that any FFL that includes the ability to buy and sell modern weapons requires considerable investment and involves a lot of scrutiny by the BATF&E. For example, to get it you must show the Gestapo that you have secure storage that meets BATF&E standards, and the record keeping required is quite extensive, especially if you are licensed to handle full automatic weapons.
