Default TX Students Made to Recite Mexican Anthem and Pledge

http://cowboybyte.com/1371/glenn-int...edge-in-class/

Posted on October 17, 2011 by Cowboy Byte

McAllen, TX high school assigned students the task of memorizing and reciting the Mexican national anthem and pledge of allegiance grabbed headlines across the blogosphere on Monday. It naturally grabbed the attention of many parents. On Monday morning, then, Glenn interviewed the father behind the story, William William’s daughter, Brenda, is the 15-year-old girl who refused to participate in the assignment and recorded it.

William described how he was surprised when Brenda told him about the assignment, how he contacted several school officials and never got any promised calls back, and even revealed another disturbing case of some shocking claims.

“The indoctrination of this stuff is going on all the time down here,” he said. “And also last year she was told in her Spanish class that this land was stolen from Mexico, yada, yada, was told to be quiet through the class.”

Was this Spanish class? Because, if so, I see nothing terribly wrong here.

It would be the same as being assigned to learn La Marseillaise in French class, or Deutschland über alles in German class. Songs are very helpful in learning another language, especially if it is a song that everyone sings the same words to. So is anything that has to be said a specific way - whether it be a Pledge of Allegiance or the Boy Scout Law.

In the 11th grade, in 1972, Communism was required in my school. American History was two semesters, each made up of three 6-week grading periods. One 6-weeks was spent on Communism. The theory of it, the history of it. Mostly directed to the USSR, since it was the largest Communist country, but other countries also. Far as I know, it did not make any of us Communists.

In English class, all three years of high school, had to learn some Shakespearean speech. Learn it, memorize it, recite it in front of the class. Marc Antony's burial speech in 10th grade. Hamlet's soliloquy in the 11th. Didn't turn me into a Shakespearean school or an Englishman. This seems pretty similar.

Now the "stand like this with your hand outstretched" part. That I don't agree with.

This is the United States of America. We learned German, French and Spanish as a foreign language. The young Jewish refugees from Hitler and Stalin did NOT tolerate singing any National Anthem except our National Anthem and that they sang with enthusiasm. Texas was an independent country. This is a free country, if anyone doesn't like living here, they have the freedom to leave! Learning a language is one thing, memorizing and singing their national anthem is another. If Mexico is so great, why are all those people sneaking into the United States? Given the authority and money, I could close our borders tight in 30 days. Of course that would shut off Washingtons drug supplies.
Russia and Nazi Germany were SOCIALIST. The bread lines of Socialist Russia disappeared when free enterprise became legal. Communisn never existed.

I agree if it is part of a history class or something to just see that Mexico has a pledge and anthem and maybe be able to read about it in the book

BUT
for each individual student to be made to 1. Memorize them, 2. Recite them from memory individually in front of the class, is uncalled for. What purpose? My child would never be made to do this. I can guarantee you!!!!

My daughter takes french language classes in school and they do not force her to recite the french pledge or sing their national anthem. Even if this is a spanish language class, spanish is not just from mexico. Why not Spain's national anthem and pledge? Why not porto rico's anthem and pledge? etc etc etc...so in all having to force and brainwash kids to recite this and tell them parts of America were stolen from mexico is absurd and should be delt with. In Boy Scouts they still say our National Anthem and Pledge along with their Oath in American English.

My Daughter was told to drop the "Under God" part of our pledge at school, I told her to recite it as I taught her, and then told her teacher and the Principle to never again interfere with our practice of our religion, unless they wanted to speak directly to my attorney. This school needs Parents to step in and squash this bug ASAP. That's one of the problems, Parents not taking interest in what's going on in the schools.

dont mind kids learning about it. BUT to REQUIRE them to memorize it and then to recite it? NOPE,NOT IN MY LIFETIME! only pledge i will support is to my country. Of course that school may be setting those kids up for Mexican citizanship by first "BINDING" them to Mexico with the Pledge. was done in Nam in some of the POW camps. POWs forced to recite the N.Viet Cong pledge then later making them believe they had switched allegence, just because they had did so.

William described how he was surprised when Brenda told him about the assignment, how he contacted several school officials and never got any promised calls back, and even revealed another disturbing case of some shocking claims.

STOLEN??? sounds like this is a MEXICAN school not a AMERICAN school!! maybe we should do a OCCUPY A SCHOOL protest there!!

I like to think I am a tolerant person. I generally believe in live and let live but hearing things like this pushes me to the brink.

I keep thinking about how the American revolution was not overwhelmingly popular. In fact, I believe the majority did not support armed rebellion. Many went back to England rather than fight against their countrymen. There are a lot of similarities in today's society. Clearly, a majority of voters supported the liberal agenda of Obozo. 98 % of my friends are conservatives and would be outraged at the thought of pledging allegiance to a foreign country. Clearly there are those who have no problem hearing about this incident. I don't know whether it's apathy, liberalism or stupidity but being an American just ain't what it used to be and neither is the American dream. I guess I've lived too long.

On behalf of Texans, I'd like to apologize for this unfortunate event in the border town of McAllen. There was a big stink on local radio yesterday. I didn't watch the local news last night, so I can't say it was a story there. But it was all quiet on the western front today - didn't hear a word about it.

As posted over in the General Discussion thread, Common Sense has passed on. Maybe not passed on, just on life support.

What would happen to a English teacher in Mexico if she/he assigned students the task of memorizing and reciting the American national anthem and pledge of allegiance? What would happen to you if you lived in Mexico because of you job, and you flew the American Flag in front of your house?

Something else. The "Texas was stolen from Mexico" thing. Yeah. It was. So?

The Navajo stole New Mexico and Arizona from the Hopis. The Americans stole it from the Navajo.

Russia stole Alaska from the Indians. We actually bought it from Russia - one of the few times a country got land by paying for it. Of course, we didn't buy it from the "real" owners. We bought it from the thieves.

The Spanish stole Mexico from the Indians. The Americans stole a big chunk of Mexico from the Mexicans. That's how it works. That's how it has always worked.

If they want it back, they need to take it. If they can. Not just sit on their butts and bitch about how us lousy gringos stole their sacred homeland.

I don't think they need to take it back! Occupying it seams to be working well for them!
