I need hearing aids, What works for you?
I want something that is Frequency specific, and fits in the ear canal. I think that the ones behind the ear would be uncomfortable, and cause problems when putting on my helmet for drag racing.

We have spent a lot of money over the years at many brand name establishments without much help to my wife. I finally convinced her to see the audiologist at COSTCO 5 years ago and he found a set that works very well for her.
Their prices are at least 50% less than anywhere else and you get lifetime adjustments free (to include a rebuild when the dog decided that one of them was a chew toy.

I hope you can find some that work for you. I think the "hearing aid" business is a huge racket that fleeces lots of folks for lots of money. Just my simple opinion.

I agree some of the reason that I don't have them yet.

Just don't settle for these Glen. It is hard to wear these and pack your elk at the same time. Also, way too much drag when you are on the strip.

Best bet is to go to the ENT get a hearing test and see what they offer.
My dad has the small behind the ear hearing aids. He forgets they are there most of the time. With his gray hair (None of which is from me) and the gray color of the body you can't even tell he has them on as the part that goes in the ear is clear. |

My dad went to Belltone, got the hearing test, and had a mold made of his inner ear. About a week later the Belltone guy came out to his house with the new hearing aids, and made sure that they both fit, and worked. Dad was impressed right away! Then he went out the back door into the yard. The first thing he heard was a Jet flying over. When we came out he was standing in the yard looking up, so we all looked up too. When we couldn't see anything, and he was still looking up, and all around the sky. So we asked what he was looking for, and he said "The Jet". There was no Jet, it was the light breeze that was blowing. Dad took those hearing aids off, handed them back to the Belltone man, and sent him on his way.

The wife bought me these to wear around the house, and when I'm out in the woods. They amplify sound, and I don't have to turn the TV up so loud that it bothers others. I like them, they work. http://www.basspro.com/RedHead-Heari...ct/95738/87384

My daughter has been wearing hers since she was 1. Shes now almost 6. You can't just get a pair and have them work perfectly. Trust me I know. She gets hers adjusted all the time. They tweak hers at least every 6 months.

At lunch with some of the fellows in the neighborhood two of them were telling about them getting hearing aids through the VA for no cost. I don't know the particulars but if you are eligible it might be worth checking out. After watching my father struggle with hearing aids and seeing the ridiculous prices they charge I will resist getting them as long as I can.

Good luck. My wife decided she really needed hearing aids about two years ago, and went to one of the highest recommended ENTs in town, with an audiologist on her staff. They did a lot of testing and found she was deficient in several frequencies, and fitted her with hearing aids to the tune of about $5K. Went back several times to have them adjusted for the specific frequencies she has difficulty with.
Long story short, she still can't hear crap, has problems with the radio in the car being too loud, which is a problem because to have it where it's comfortable for her, no one else in the car can hear it including our kids who have great hearing. She also complains of road noise in our Navigator which I think is crazy as it's the quietest car we've ever driven. Sounds like the jet plane carver mentioned. ![]() She says I have hearing problems. Who's been shooting 55 years that doesn't? But I'm not buying hearing aids. I just ask people occasionally to speak up a little, works for me. |

Most of the time tinnitus can't be fixed with hearing aids. So you really need to get a hearing test done to see if hearing aids can even help you.
There is a surgery for tinnitus but I don't know much about it. |

I started shooting when I was 15. Back then our ear protection was a plug of cotton. After many years of tintinitis and severe hearing loss, I went to an audiologist and had my hearing checked. He told me my problem was nerve damage due to exposure to excessive noise and hearing aids would be of no help since they only amplify sound and my sound receptors were damaged beyond repair. I hear almost nothing above mid-frequency.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_ear
If you look on there. What happens when we shoot a gun without hearing protection on is this. Sharp loud noise hits ear drum causing it to move fast that in turn sends a shock wave through your middle ear to your inner ear into your cochlea. That is filed with fluid and tiny microscopic nerve endings that look like tiny hairs. Well liquid is a better transfer medium for sound than air is. That causes a massive pressure build up and shock wave in the liquid that shears the tips of the nerves off. This damage is what causes the ringing in our ears. you can't replace the nerve endings with hearing aids and they don't grow back. Thus Tinnitus can't be solved with hearing aids. Again GO TO THE ENT and get your hearing checked and see if Aids are even an options for you. If you have tinnitus they are not going to work. |
