I had occasion a couple of times many years ago to work with the police in the US. I developed a healthy respect for them. An incident last week in the US has shown they are still the good guys I remember.
My daughter was in the street trying to find a dog that had escaped the home. A police cruiser stopped and asked if she was OK. After hearing the story and taking a description they went on their way. After my Daughter found the offender, she went out to find the cruiser to tell them he had been detained. They said that was good news, and they could now call off the second car involved in the search ![]() Now if we could just get them to drop the rather harsh term 'Law Enforcement' for 'Policing the community'. So much nicer.

What you say is pretty much true in any free nation, Tranter. Yes, there can be bad apples in any barrel, but it is my profound belief that the vast majority of LEOs in nations like the US and the UK are decent folks whose primary aim is to serve the public and keep them safe. I remember encountering a Bobbie in London some years ago. It was quite late in the evening and my wife and I, along with another couple, were heading back to our hotel. We had been out sightseeing all day and had gotten quite a distance from where we needed to be. We weren't lost, but we were very tired indeed, and as a result, we decided to ride the tube and buses back to the hotel rather than walk. Unfortunately, we were very uncertain which route to take. London's public transport system is excellent, but it can be confusing for people unfamiliar with it.
Anyway, a Bobbie strolled up and asked us if all was well. We explained our problem and he immediately gave us precise directions on the most efficient route back to the hotel. I suspect he saved us from ending up in the Outer Hebrides or even worse! ![]()

That's nice to hear. Actually most departments are getting more and more "proactive" in their communties instead of "reactive." The philosophy is, "Community Oriented Policing." We still enforce the laws, but we're folks too... After all, the badge isn't bigger than the person wear'n it. ![]() |

No truer words were ever spoken, Sarge! The same sentiment is true with regard to a firearm I believe. A weapon is no better nor worse than the man holding it. A wise man once said that a person must never draw a weapon in anger or spite . . . lest he holster it in shame.

I gotta tell ya. There is no way you could pay me enough to be a cop... They are under paid, shot at, disliked and a whole bunch of other stuff. We need more law enforcement. We have drive by shootings, muggings, rape, dope dealers and murder that our under staffed law enforcement agencies must contend with. If there are any police officers on this forum, I say thanks...

Well, have you considered the possibility that they just don't like college Russian majors who spend time on TFF instead of studying their Russian verbs, Vlad? I mean, that is a possibility you know.
Of course, it could also be that you have become know to them not as "Vlad the Impaler" but "Vlad the Lead Foot." ![]() ![]() ![]()

Actually, Pistolen, that would be "Vlad Two-Speed." (Off or revved out.)
I understand he calls I90 from Spokane to George "the back stretch." ![]() Pops Last edited by armedandsafe; 02-01-2009 at 09:44 PM.. |

Hah. No, it comes from their lack of professionalism and disposition towards other law enforcement. I'm not saying its all of them, but a good 50%.
One of my dad's coworkers stopped off duty to aid a State Trooper in a fight on the side of a highway. He might have saved the guy's life. Several years later the same State Trooper pulled the same guy over and after giving him a very stern talking to, returned to the man's vehicle and said, "Just so you know, I do recognize you, and thats why I'm not giving you a ticket. But you can count us even now." A dramatic example, but I can tell you between me and my dad we have had probably 4 or 5 run ins with State Troopers, at least half of them were complete assholes. That is a sentiment echoed by my dad's coworkers. In addition they have actually attempted to organize some efforts to improve their relations- thats how bad they are. My dad's union also endorsed our Republican candidate, Dino Rossi for governor. The State Troopers union president showed up to the news conference announcing the endorsement and made a ruckus, refused to leave, and showed up with tons of picketers.

Tranter, I'm glad she 'found' a couple of LEO's who were truly responsible and interested in their patrol zone. Far too many aren't.
