I love mine. Had it for a long time. Over 20 something years. Used to bring it to the rifle range and shoot milk jugs at 100yrds with it.

got a 586CM the 686's non stainless cousin. I love to take it to the range and run the target back as far as it will go and watch the people that are watching the shooters through the glass. They always got this look of disbelief. i take 1 shot and roll it back in. I always hit the head.
![]() I would take a 586 or 686 over a python any day.

I purchased my 686 about 20 years ago. It originally had a 6" barrel but I sent it back to S&W to have them install a 4" barrel. I then sent it to Mag-Na-Port to have it ported. I did a trigger job myself. I originally used the gun for PPC competition but now use it as a camp gun with the 4" barrel.

I used to have a 586 DCM with an 8 3/8" bbl. I bulged it with a hot XTP load

JLA, sorry to hear that about your 586. Those are great guns!
I bought one in the late 90's which it was about 12 years old when I bought it. But it was NIB and never seen a round in the cylinder when I bought it.

dammit zane. Thats the one. Except mine had a hogue monogrip. I still have the old bulged barrel. The rest of the gun got botched by a local smith when I tried to have the barrel replaced. AllI could find was a 4 inch replacement and murles bent the frame torquing the barrel back on. I ended up selling it to a friend of my bros for 4 hundred. Murles refused to replace it insisting it was already bent but did agree to try to straighten it for free. He did ok but i could still tell and consequently sold it...

Tell ya what, with the length of that barrel, sometimes it's hard to tell!
![]() Holding that beast up for a few round's will wear a person out real quick. But over all, well the first time I picked it up I had to have it! (one of those things)...just had to have it! ![]()

Im thinkin he did the exact same thing i coulda done with a hammer through the frame and a wrench on the barrel. It was bent just above the crane and the barrel was pointing off to the right so it bent when he removed the old barrel. He swears to damn it was like that when i brought it in but I noticed immediately with the new 4 inch bbl when i went to pick it up. I sure woulda noticed with the 8 incher. No worries though. i got 4 bills for it and Mr. Helix has found me another. thanks Old Semperfi for starting this thread...

Dude the trigger is perfect. I dont think I could improve it if i wanted to. All I did was remove those gorgeous wood grips and put my ol workhorse Hogues off the one that got away.. The front sight has me a bit puzzled still, Im trying to figure out exactly how it works before i go zero it in... I know the dial under the sight blade elevates the blade but why 4 set screws??? I figure they are numbered to the corresponding number on the elevator dial, but why????
