as a child i tried to melt lead on a electric range stove top it didn't melt. however it did on a gas stove top. the melting point for lead is 600*f or 325 c so i doubt the hot plate would work.

I don't think it will. I use one of these for melting WW's and making ingots.

It melt lead fast. I can do around 1,000 pounds on a tank of gas.

I used a hotplate before and a small cast iron pot.
It worked but took forever .

Then I used a Coleman stove that worked better .
Then I wised up and bought a turkey fryer like Rusty said .
Boy what a Difference it sure melts em Fast .

I've used a cast iron pot on a wood fire out in the yard and it worked pretty well for both ingots and casting bullets. Just make sure you've got a good bunch of coals going.
