While I don't claim to be anything close to an expert on this subject, I will give you a list of those manufacturers I know of - it won't be complete, and I'm sure I'll forget some of the obvious - but here goes!
Colt Kimber Smith & Wesson Taurus (Brazil) Rock Island (Phillipines) Shooters Arms Manufacturing (Phillipines) Para-Ordinance (Canada) Llama (Spain) STI Springfield Armory Norinco (China) Armscor (?) Guncrafter Industries Les Baer Chip McCormick Used to build 1911's Remington-Rand (WWII contract) Savage Arms (WWII contract) Singer (WWII contract) Star (Spain) Hope this helps!

MTNBOOMER, if I'm not mistaken, Armscor and Charles Daly are both manufactured in the same plant, in the Philipines.

If you inclued both those who currently make 1911 & 1911A1 copies and clones and those that made them at one time or another, I'd guesstimate the number is right up around 45 or 50.
In addition to those already listed, you also have to add these: Remington-UMC (WWI) Springfield Armory (WWI - The U.S.Armory at Springfield, MA, not the current commercial company) Argentine M1927 (License built copy) Norwgian M1914 (License built copy) AMT (the first commercial copy) .....and probably many others. |

Don't forget Caspian.
Yes, I know they sell parts, not finished guns, but technically, the frame *is* the gun. |

Another Argentine clone was the Ballester Molina. How ever it's parts would not interchange with American Factory 1911's or A1's.
They are good shooting 45's though.

Another WWII contract - Union Switch and Signal. did Rock-o-la make any? I know they made M1 Carbines. Oh, I saw Reminton Rand, did anyone mention Remington Arms? I've got one of those.
Nighthawk Custom Les Baer Ed Brown Detonics is back in the game again There are a slew of shops that build their own on others frames and slides Did Essex ever make complete guns? AMT, their back in the game again too Last edited by 45Smashemflat; 04-22-2006 at 10:08 AM.. |
