Default T38 6.5x50 jap

bought one all matching with cleaning rod and mum, the bore is dark probably between fair and good. metal finish look almost browned but it still looks black The wood has darkened but has no major dents or cracks

I have only cleaned the bore have wore out 3 old 30cal brushes and still getting lots of black crap could that be from the brushes? the bore is looking better all the time. have stoped cleaning stocks have watched to many road shows when they tell them there $150,000.00 hutch is only worth $10,000 or less after refinishing

Hi Toney.....well, if your Type 38 Arisaka was made in the early Federal Period and made in New England or the mid-Atlantic states, I certainly wouldn't recommend that you refinish it.......

However, Type 38s are still fairly common, and not that expensive, so a good clean-up of the stock (even a light sanding) won't hurt the value. The only ones that seem to be climbing in value are those with an intact Mum.....those are kinda hard to find.

As far as that dirty bore goes, a lot of our members swear by Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner......

If you'll note Tex.....that post was made at 7:29AM. That means that I was still on my first cup of coffee. Hell, I can't even find my glasses until my 2nd cup, and my eyes don't open 'till my 3rd cup.

......and I don't read well until after my afternoon nap......

So THERE!

OK Toney.....I'm awake now, so here's what the Standard Catalog of Firearms says:

Arisaka Type 38 Rifle (M.1905):

Exc. - $175
V.G. - $150
Good - $125
Fair - $90

The Blue Book says:

Model 38 Arisaka Rifle:

90% - $300
80% - $225
70% - $125
60% - $75

Those are supposedly "Mum intact" prices......however, most of the Arisakas you'll run across have had the Mum ground off, so in the real world, Arisakas with an intact Mum are starting to command a premium.
