Smith & Wesson J Frame aluminum frame stainless bodyguard model 638 $430 + tax
Sig Sauer model 239 in .357 Sig caliber $515 + tax Glock model 26 9mm sub compact $525 + tax My wife has taken over my Glock 26 and I need a summertime carry gun. The Smith has a distinct weight and cost advantage (with another advantage of shotshell capability for water moccassins and rattlesnakes) the others are good for wild animals of the 2 & 4 legged varieties...

I can say I've got 2 of the 3...
a S&W mdl.60 and a Sig239 in 9mm ![]() IMHO, I've found the most practical would be the "J" too. |

I handled all 3 side by side and I like the Glock the most...The Sig was nice but almost impossible to find scrimshaw ready grips for...I imagine wood grips are available...I liked the Smith because of the extremely light weight...availability of scrimshaw ready grips and other aftermarket accessories (pocket holsters, ankle holsters)..but the Glock is more rust resistant than the Smith and Sig (Sig has matte blued magazines) and more importantly fit my hand best...I'm not one of these guys that suffers from testosterone poisoning so the caliber is acceptable to me...

Been doing some web research. Found Chuck Hawk's site and liked what I saw. He had some interesting statistics on various loads. One of the most interesting was the percentage of one-shot stops particular loads performed.
Handgun Cartridge Power Chart Based upon the chart, I'd have to pick the S&W in .357 Magnum and use either Federal or Remington in 125gr. JHP. Second choice would be the Glock in 9X19 using Cor-Bon +P 115gr JHP. Although Chuck speaks highly of the .357 Sig in his comparison of the .357 Magnum and the .357 Sig, I probably wouldn't choose it over the 9X19 for a semi-auto simply because of longevity of the 9X19 design and its widespread availability. Finding 15rd. magazines for 9X19 is a relatively simple task. Finding legal 15rd. mags for the .357 Sig is somewhat more difficult and costly. Also, I can find 9X19 at most Wal-Marts. .357 Sig is somewhat more scarce. Shooting the 9X19 is less expensive, as the ammo market for the round is intensely competitive, giving me excellent deals on ammo such as S&B 115gr. FMJ delivered to my door for ~$125/1000rds. I think I'll go practice with an S&W J-frame this weekend for Father's Day. I might even look at buying one in the not-too-distant future! |

Chuck's site is great and serves as a nice refresher course in just about everything about firearms and ammo.
Everyone should not only visit his site but should also earmark it as a favorite. I refer to it frequently.

I have a .357 Magnum S&W K Frame model 65 with a 3 inch barrel...It's a little big for concealed carry when it's 100 degrees outside...I also have a Glock 17 9mm With 3 17 round magazines that has the same problem...I can find .357 Sig ammunition at my local retailors..even if I couldn't I could buy a .40 S&W caliber barrel...I really like the Sig because I don't have a Sig (Good enough reason for me)

Hi Gang,
Personally, I prefer the revolver. I do my fishing in the South Caroilina low-country (just another name for swamps). I load my Ruger Security Six with Speer's shotshells 'cause I don't like to share my fishing holes with the cottonmouths. I do the same on the hunting clubs when we go deer driving. SC has an early deer season; therefore, the rattlers are still out, trying to mate and they get real PO'd when disturbed. BTW, I do wear chaps when stomping around in the woods, just in case. I've never had a maintenance or rust problem with the stainless steel. Your Friend in Dixie, Sir Bug |

Congrats on your new weapon. Always go with what makes you happy, not what others think you "might" be happy with.

Since I own a 239 that would be my pick - got a really good deal on it shortly after they first hit the market - although mine is 9mm.

Myself , I would never own any of the current Glocks - fired one , did not care for the feel , pointability or the trigger as well as the plastic. They have no appeal to me in the least. As was stated in one post - "Largely stamped steel and plastic , resulting in a pistol which is extremely inexpensive to produce but is sold at a very high cost to the consumer."

I think they are the best sidearms available anywhere at any price...to each their own.

Logansdad -
What you really need to look at is the Kahr K40 in .40S&W (they also make a Kahr K9 in 9mm). Same design as the Glock, but fits the hand (at least mine) much better. And I prefer the sights on the Kahr to anything else I've seen. A real simple design - a front dot and a rear dot. Line the two up and go bang. Nono Problemo. Don't have to try and align the front post in the rear notch and make sure that that it is level with the top of the notch etc., etc. Just my 2cents worth
