Chineese restraunts

Why do you think all chineese buffet restraunts are the same? The same food the same look, the same fixtures, cups, sauce. Most all the people can't speak english. What gives?

Maybe they're all the same "franchise" just with different working names. Not a bad marketing concept actually.

Hmm, curious. It is kind of unusual that they are all kind of the same. In local restaurants, and there are a ton of them, I've noticed that the food quality is great for about the first year. After that, the food just lays around and gets stale and dries out, nobody bothers to cook fresh food after the initial popularity rush. I know exactly which ones to go to, where the food is still decent.

I think restaurant supply has the same cups and plates and things with oriental motifs on them, that's why those are the same. The Chinese know that they can arrive on U.S. soil and make a killing off Americans that like Chinese food! I'm noticing the Mexican restaurants are popping up all over too.

I've noticed that a lot of the ethnic food in places I've been cater to what Americans will actually eat, not what comes from their country of origin.
I can't find decent Chinese, Mexican, or Indian food around here. Examples: tomato sauce on my mexican food instead of red chili sauce, Curry so weak that I'm not even sure it's curry, and why is everything sweet and sour?

Over the entire US there are 4 mian companies that run all the buffets.

They bring folks from mainland china here, pay them in cash, pay as little taxes as possible. They move them around from state to state, so they are temp workers only.

We know several local managers who have told us the whole scam

Rocket J Squirl, we have several Chinese restaurants that have been in the same place, with the same owners for about thirty years or more. I like the food in one of them better, but both of them are good. They must be going OK, in one of them the husband drives a Cadillac and the wife drives a Mercedes.

I do not know about the 4 company thing. I do know some are good and some aren't. And they tend to stay that way. I like them (the good ones.) Of course there is mostly non english speaking people in them. Otherwise it would be just another "italian" restaurant or steakhouse. Can you imagine a mexican restaurant with your white neighbors running it. I think not. When I want "ethnic" food. I want the real thing.

They are the last of the family owned ones. As soon as the next generation takes them from thier parents, they will sel out to the big 4.

I'm kind of lost here, who are the big 4? Do you seriously think people will give up their livelihood to some big operation? This is a college town and the one place is usually always full and the other pretty close, from opening to closing each day. Besides, one is across the town square from the police station and the other is in shouting distance.

And it's not even typical Chinese food... Just like the Japanese do, the Chinese have an Americanized food that they prepare which we like but it's only faintly Chinese in nature. The Japanese have their Hibachi style steak houses but that style of cooking really doesn't exist on a large scale in Japan and has more of a Korean influence. The Japanese Steak houses here are really just for show. People go and eat what they think is Japanese and leave happy. I suppose that's all that matters...

Most Americans would likely vomit trying to eat real Japanese cuisine, and most Americans also think that a California roll makes them appear more sophisticated. I'll beg to differ on that...

lol yeah, it's called McDonalds ! They do have "American" restraunts though mostly burger joints and chains.

+1 I'll eat anything that makes me happy, doesn't matter what it is. If it's good eats, it's good eats in any language.

And yes, California rolls are for Californians, ( and yes, i'm stereotyping here ) the land of I'm better than you, your boob job and your purse puppy!

Not real ethnic food. Most Americans would not like the real thing so it has been Americanized, same with Korean and Mexican.
Like most things some are good and some are not so go with the one you like.

I have a really funny true story here. Kinda in line with the post anyhow.
Years ago, when I was a commercial repair roofer, we had two restaurant jobs in one day. One Chinese restaurant, one Mexican.
We went to the Chinese first, all the staff in the kitchen were Hispanic men. Then when we went to the Mexican restaurant all the cooks were Asian boat people. No kidding.
The restaurants were a mile apart in the same city.

When we were dating I wanted to take my (to be) wife to a restaurant that my Salvadorean friends reccomended. It served authentic Central American food. She looked in and saw the clientele, and balked. "Those guys look rough" was her comment. So we went next door to an authentic Vietnamese place that I had seen good reviews of in the paper. Her thought was "It can't be that different from Chinese." WRONG! We ordered the house specialty, a 5 course beef meal. First thing out looked like dog turds. I liked 'em, but she wasn't impressed. Second course looked like DT's wrapped in seaweed. Not bad, but I had to help her eat hers. Third course, they brought out a plate of very thin sliced, very red raw beef with vegetables and herbs and what I have to call "tortillas" for lack of Vietnamese terminology. you boiled the meat to your liking right at the table and made your own spring roll. Nice, I thought. She liked this too. Fourth course was something I really can't remember but she thought it was so vile she was ready to leave. I ate her part and we asked for the bill. The little Vietnamese lady kept asking "You no like?" to the point I told her "We're just in a hurry, sorry."
So she put the fifth course, beef soup, into a REALLY big styrofoam tub and gave it to us to take home.
My wife was still hungry, even with the soup smelling up my '72 Charger from the back seat. I got her some McBurgers. All the way home she burped them up, complaining they tasted like "Vietnamese cheeseburgers."
We went to her aunt's house and told them of the adventure. My wife's cousin came home from working at Wendy's and was starving. I looked at her and remembered the soup. "I got you something."
She was slurping it down and asked where we got it, which we told her. "What's in it?" she asked. I said "Mrrow."
She turned green. Seriously.

We later did go several times to the Central American place, and if it's still there I'd reccomend El Pollo Loco on Buford Highway in Atlanta to anyone. Just don't judge it by the looks of the place. Judge it by the fact Hispanics eat there, and that there are two menus. One for Gringos and one for others. Both are good!

That's very true... Fried rice in the Asian countries is a rarity. Most meals are served with white rice. If you do like I did, and put some Soy sauce on your plain, bland white rice they call you childish...

Most of the 'Chinese' food in our 'Chinese' restaurants is coated with sauces and generally VERY fatty ('cause it tastes good). That's not so for authentic Chinese food. But hey, what we're eating tastes better, so it's a win-win...

You guys must go to the wrong places. My wife has found several small family owned dim-sum eaterys that are as good as where she comes from in asia. We take her kin to them when they are in the states. To which they say. Why are eating eating the same things we always eat. Where are the hamburgers!

Exactly. There is a relatively short list of what Americans consider "Chinese food", and this isn't just in WHAT the food is, but down to presentation and preparation as well. It's a business, their business isn't actually introducing ethnic food to the American people, its making food that will sell well!

Not ALL Chinese food restaraunts serve the same food. The one I visit occasionally will trade me a buffet meal for a farm pond turtle I pick up while setting my decoys to duck hunt. They let it walk around in the kitchen eating flies and bugs until it is big enough to make turtle soup. They do not run the air conditioner in the kitchen, so they have to leave the windows and doors open to circulate air. No air conditioning in Texas heat + food preperation = lots of flies. They usually have 4 or 5 of the turtles walking around in the kitchen at any given time. I was surprised to see how fast those turtles grow! I guess they have plenty of food, because there is not a moment during the day that someone in that kitchen is not swinging a flie swatter.
....so there is variety. (smile)

I'd pass on the buffet meal bluesea... There's something about the fact that every time a fly eats something it first regurgitates stomach acid onto it... If there are enough flies in the kitchen to fatten a turtle, then there are enough flies to bother my food too. Let's not even talk about the ones that they swat and aren't able to stop before it hits the egg drop soup.
