Default Harrington and Richardson 16ga.

Hi, I've come across my late Granfather's shotgun and am looking for some info on it. It is a 16 ga. single with a hammer. On top it reads 'MADE IN USA 16 GA. CHOKE' (what type of choke?). On the side, 'TOPPER M48 Harrington and Richardson Arms Co.' The serial number appears to be I 42 66, or possibly
I 42166. Really, I'd just like to know how old it is, what type of choke it has, and it would be interesting to know it's value.
Thanks!

Almost certainly a full, Dan. Nearly all those old singles, like the Winchester Mod 37, for example, came with full choke barrels.

the actually manufacture era of the H&R model 48 was 1943 thru 1956. H&R used the "I" letter code in 1948. according to the 1948 catalog gauges available were 12, 16, 20 & 410. barrel bengths available were 26, 28 &30 inches with the 28 & 30 inch being full choked and the 26 inch being modified choked. dealer price in 1948 was $21.50.

this is a kind of unique shotgun, a model 48 manufactured in 1948.

I have just "home restored" my inherited (was my Dad's) "H" (1947) M48 16g...if you haven't fired your's yet LOL hold it tight...little bit of a kick to it. Mine says full choke on it and has the 30" barrel. From what I have read across other sights...street value is around 100.00.

This is great info! I've also got my grandfathers old H&R Topper M48 16 ga. and have often wondered about the choke and year made! The serial# is G16***. With the #'s already listed it would seem safe to assume that mine was manufactured in 1946. It also has a 30" barrel, would this mean it is full choke? It's in very good shape and I would like to get it cleaned up and shoot worthy.
