30-30 bullet choice - The Firearms Forum

I have been looking around at different bullets for my 30-30 I know that they are a diameter of .308" but why do certain bullet companys list bullets for 30-30 and then also have bullets in .308" arnt they the same bullet. I know I have to use either a round or flat nose bullet tip since its a tube fed gun.

A bullet made for a 30-30 travels at a lot lower velocity than a 308 or 30-06. Therefore it needs to be made so that it expands correctly at the lower velocity. Hope this helps.

Years ago they used to list the 30-30 bullets as .307 diameter in order to tell the difference. There was no actual diameter difference.

Also, a .30-30 has to have a flat or round nose if used in a tubular magazine. Most .308" bullets have a pointed nose of some sort.

yes i know that, i just bought some stuff today hornady .308 170 grain flat point bullets, cci large rifle primers and imr-3031 powder

What brand case are you using?

Good choice. Hornady makes some fine bullets and everything else is good, as well.

What sort of cases? I prefer Winchester, but YMMV.

i will be using remington cases since i have over 100 that i have been saving every time i go shooting

Well, looks like you're making up your own recipe. No such loads listed in the Hornady manual calling up those components with the 170gr FP. Good luck and be careful! Let us know how it turns out.

That's a wise choice. Since you've started with Remington cases, stick with them as you develop loads. If you have to get more cases, stick with the Remington, as they are what your recipe will be designed for. If you have to change cases, start your load development over again.

Are all those Remington cases from the same lot number? Different cases, even from the same manufacturer are not the same if from different lots! Be careful!

no the cases are not all from the same lot. plano what does hornady recemond for there 170 grain fp?

Hornady/Frontier cases and federal 210 primers. However, you can work up a load with what you have. I recommend sorting cases by volume though.

in the imr hand book they have listed hornady 170 grain fp bullets, remington cases and federal primers

The only one's i found were at cabela's . REMINGTON BULK BULLET'

150 GR. SPCL .305 DIA.
170 GR. SPT .305 DIA.

WATCH WHAT YOU LOOK AT .
the one's above these or for .30 carbine .307 dia.

hornady
150 gr. RN.
170 gr. RN.
FOR THE 3030

I remeber seeing some 170 gr. RN HP'S there to.

I will look tomarrow for you and let you know.
