Default Mini 14 Question

Ok, I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'm going to ask anyway just to be sure. Better safe than sorry.

I recently inherited a Mini 14 in pretty good shape. It needed a thorough cleaning, which I did, and now I'm ready to go try it out.

I've read conflicting opinions on whether or not rifles chambered for .223 can safely fire 5.56 NATO cartridges. Generally speaking, I think the answer to that question is "no". However, I think that although the Mini 14 is marked as a .223, it can safely fire 5.56 cartridges because it was specifically designed to do so.

Yes? No?

John, thanks. That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure. As soon as I find a good, convenient place to shoot near me (I'm a sub-division dweller), I plan to do just that.

Scott, go here, and you can download an owner's manual for it. Answers all your questions, including that one.

John, I'm in Boone County, near Florence. I've heard of Hardin County, but I'm not sure where it is.

I graduated from high school in Lyon County (Eddyville).

Alpo, I want to thank you for the link also. I was able to get a manual for a couple of old Rugers that I have.

I get that all the time. You know, the water tower upon which "Florence Y'all" is written used to have "Florence Mall" written on it (it's right next to the Florence Mall), but somebody decided that city-owned property couldn't have a commercial message on it. So they changed it to "Florence Y'all" as sort of a joke, and it's been that way ever since.

I just got back from putting about 100 rounds of 5.56 ammo through the Mini 14. It seems to shoot where I point it, which All Over the Place, and I had no problems. Fun rifle to shoot.

You'll find that with a mini it will hold a better pattern with the 223 round till it get hot and then it's point and pray.

If I am not mistaken, 5.56 Nato is .223 (or vice versa).

I don't even know what to say. I'm speechless.

Sounds a lot like Jerry Reed to me.

Kenny Price was a county singer back in the late 60's and early 70's. His song, The Sheriff of Boone County was one of his Top 10 songs, in 1969. He was raised in Boone County, KY but he was never the sheriff. He was probably most famous for being on the old Hee Haw TV show.

Yep. When I looked for it, I looked for "Jerry Reed, Sheriff of Boone County", but nothing turned up. I always thought it was Jerry.
