Great going, Florida. You set the stage for the other 49 States to join! Kudos to Republican Governor Rick Scott for having the correctness and guts to move forward on this critical issue !

Florida is the first state requiring drug testing to receive welfare! In signing the new law,

Republican Gov. Rick Scott said, "If Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are drug-free.

Applicants who test positive for illicit substances won't be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment.

Those who fail a second time would be banned from receiving funds for three years!

Naturally, a few people are crying this is unconstitutional.

How is this unconstitutional ?

It's completely legal that every other working people have to pass drug tests in order to get a J-O-B which supports those on welfare!

Don't get to excited.. Michigan passed that bill a while back and the courts struck it down as an invasion of privacy. What privacy do u deserve when I buy your food pay your rent, bus fares, cell phones, booze and drugs. States and Feds have lost their dam minds! These bills passing are a sign of being on the right track!!

I had a great idea. Make the welfare folks work cleaning streets, cutting grass, picking up trash. Detroit looks awful and if the welfare folk had to work cleaning it up it would look great! Also think of that labor force we would have. Oh yeah if they don't show they don't get a check! Simple stuff that would work. They may even learn skills such as...... A work ethic!

The drug testing requirement for access to the public trough was implemented in Florida in May of this year. Missouri followed suit in July of this year. Two down, 48 to go!

Michigan tried in 1999 with a law requiring RANDOM drug testing, and it was struck down as a violation of the 4th amendment; unreasonable search and seizure.

OK, lets just say that Jazmine has 5 kids, and test positive for drugs. Now we got to pay for her treatment, while still supporting her 5 kids, and now we also have to pay someone to take care of them. This sounds like a great idea, but the truth is that the drug testing will be done on a random basis, and at the tax payers expence. The politicians don't really want to catch anyone, it would be way to costly. They just want to make you think they are doing something about the problem. The right way to do this is to put them to work, and give them surplus Government food. But then again, if Jazmine had to go to work, who would pay for someone to keep her kids while she was out cleaning up the trash from the streets?

My thought is that even if the state had to pay to have the rehab/child care done if a person tested positive, at least that money would be going to a wage earner and not someone sitting around doing drugs waiting for their check to arrive.

I say if a person is able bodied and collecting welfare then they need to work for that check. Put them to work collecting garbage, staff them in state run daycare centers for the ones who have kids and get caught on drugs. For the ones who are not able bodied and on disability, then we need to find computer/call center types of jobs where the physical strain is lessened.

The only way you should be getting a check every month and not be doing something to earn that check, is if you worked your whole life and legitimately retired and draw SS.

We have random drug and alcohol testing where I work why can't they? Obozo talks about New Deal economics to put people to work but keep welfare. That was used instead of welfare. We could do that now. They need somebody to watch the kids, tere's mom or a friend or pay an older kid to do it. They will figure it out if they want to eat. Enough kid glove give away's. Work or die.

Paint it any color you like but the fact is the present welfare system is unsustainable. Many have been on the government teat for so many generations, the word work isn't in their vocabulary. It's only a sacred cow because the vast numbers represent too many votes for the Dem's. Change will only come about when we become another third world country. Too bad the politicians ego's will never let them realize this.

I know your saying this saracastically... But they would never have to to up if they don't want to. They just don't get a check then. As far as who is gonna watch the kids.... They thousands of social workers could watch them. There's tons of empty buildings. These people have to contribute.

If he would only get over the idea of college discount for illegals I would probably support him. He said last night you cannot have a heart if you do not support education for children. I do. Educate them through high school and then they can get a job and work through college like my daughter did. Why the "in state" discount for college?? I thought the idea of keeping the illegals here was because they can do the jobs that others do not. So we now have to train them to take away even more jobs??

I cannot support any plan that gives illegals a benefit that a US citizen cannot get. So in Fla a Georgia resident will have to pay more to attend a college in Fla than and illegal pays. Not right.

No kid should be ALLOWED to remain in a home where the parents are druggies -

A friend told a story about a five year old she was watching who picked up a dollar bill off the coffee table, scraped some dust on an end table into a pile, then rolled the bill into a tube and proceeded to snort it.
Asked where she learned to do that, she said "Mommy."

Leaving a child in a home like that is child cruelty, reckless endangerment, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
