Years ago, I recall seeing these plain white porcelain coffee mugs, but the thing was, these mugs had to have been at least 1/2 inch thick. Most mugs today might be 1/4 inch at most, but I want some of these old SUPER thick mugs! Any of you guys ever seen the ones I'm talking about? Any idea where I might find them?
Thanks in advance concerning my very trivial request!

I remember 'em. When I was a kid we had three white coffee mugs. Two were, as you said, about a quarter inch thick. The other one was much thicker. Same outside dimensions as the other two, but probably only held half as much.
Good luck on your search. I'm looking for those glasses they used to have in motels in the 60s. Motels and cheap restaurants. They were kind of barrel-shaped. The top and bottom were about the same diameter, but the body of the glass, where you held it, was slight bigger around.

You can find about a half dozen in the shelf at my ranch house. they are off white to yellowish with age now, but I have some. The only problem is that they don't hold as much coffee because the OD is the same, but the ID is much smaller.

Funny. My mother was a china painter and I learned a lot from her over the years. The finer the china the thinner it is. The best china is translucent, Hutschenreuther and Wedgewood are among the best and my mother's favorites. I love drinking coffee out of a thin fancy cup. I used to love to drink coffee out of Royal Albert but the cups are really too small and very fragile. Imagine if you will, a redneck who loves Royal Albert china. Now you can get Corelle or similar materials that are thin and much much more rugged. I'm fond of Dunnoon too. No accounting for taste, huh?

I'd try a restaurant supply house. It sounds like the old diner mug.

Check out restaurant supply providers. My cousin opened up her BBQ joint, setting up all her coffee mugs with the old styled, off-white, thick ceramic type. You might have to purchase a dozen, but one could drink and not worry about breaking the 'last' mug (for a while!).

hkruss, what you're looking for is a U.S. Navy coffee mug from the WW II era, or a medical corp mug.
About 35 years ago we used them in all the local fire stations because they were inexpensive surplus. You could cold cock a grizzly with one of 'em and they kept the coffee hot for about 3 hours! |

Thanks to all for the replies! Skipper, I think they were Navy mugs now that you mention it.
SoMo, the mug shown in the link you gave might be it. That mug definitely looks thicker than the average mug. I think I will order a couple even if it is not the one! Thanks to all.

My dad was a cook in the Army, Korean era. He bragged on these style of mugs, if you dropped them onto a hard floor they didn't break. I've seen 'em SOMEWHERE but can't recall.
Those Navy clues might be a good start.

I know the type of mug you are looking ofr. My grandfather has two or three of them, I will try and get a pic to ya to make shure. I know them well cuz I through one at my brother when I was 11 and about killed him with it. It knocked him out cold and I got in soooooo much trouble. I had blisters on my posterier for about two weeks.

Hey Suicide Ride! Actually, they look more like the one in the link that Southern Moss gave (post #12). Top and bottom have the same O.D. while the middle has an inward curve. They probably would only have a capacity of six, maybe eight ounces. I'm still not sure the one in her link is the right one. Hard to tell from the picture. But it's the thickest one I've seen so far!
Just imagine a plain mug that is at least three or four times as thick as the typical coffee mug. Either white or slightly off white. Hard to remember as I am dredging up memories from many years ago! Thanks for the effort. ![]() Yeah Big Ugly, I can imagine they would do some damage if you hit someone with it!!! Post the pics if you find them. Thanks, Kendall

I found lots of mugs on the net doing a search on "navy coffee mug" Some are hard to judge thickness. This site has some heavey duty ones that they claim are WW2 style.
