Re: Garate Anitua .38 Detective
according to the book 'pistols of the world' by hogg & weeks this company operated between about 1870 through the spanish civil war era. they manufactured the typical ruby type automatic for the french and italian governments during wwI and also manufactured a top break chmbered for the 455 cartridge that was adopted by the british during wwI. after wwI they continued the manufacture of the ruby type automatics under several different names and at least one revolver based on the colt police postive revolver. this is probably what you have. according to hogg & weeks this company taylored the quality of their handguns to its market. this mean the one meant for the military are of better quality than those meant fot export. your revolver marked in english was manufactured soley for export. i would have this revolver checked before firing as the spanish had a habit of using soft malleable iron.
