Default reloading original 56/50 Spencer and 50/70 Sharps Carbine!

I'm a little unsure on one thing in the reloading of the cartridges for these Carbines. I have everything I need except, how thick should the wad be, what can it be made of and compressability of the powder charge?? I've converted both to centerfire and both are in excellent shape!! OK, some of you are going to say why take a chance on destroying an original gun!!! I don't look at it that way, what if push comes to shove wouldn't you like to know if -ALL- your weapons even your old timers work as they should as a back up!! To take anything for granted is this day and age is a bit on the "NAIVE" side wouldn't you say!!! Joe
