which would be the loudest cartridge to fire, .22 hornet centerfire or a .22 rimfire long rifle hollow point? i am currently in a 'discussion' about this with a friend and would like some friendly information. i own and use a .22lr rimfire but DO NOT have a .22 centerfire to compare it with. i say the .22 centerfire hornet would be the loudest? what say you all? thanks

A look at the muzzle velocities tells the story. The Hornet gun propels a 40 grain bullet probably twice as fast as a 22LR gun. That means the Hornet case houses much more powder and more powder is more gas and more gas is more pressure and more pressure is more noise. So for noise the Hornet would be the loudest, I would think.

without any doubt, the hornet is louder. we used to use the 22 hornet to drop cows every October; it's a pretty peppy little round. never once failed to drop a cow on the first shot either.

.22 hornet is waaaaay louder. In fact its louder from a rifle than the .22 LR is from a pistol. The .22 hornet is even louder than the .22 magnum...
