I bought a Remington R3 at the first gun show of the year, and right out of the box, I am a little underwhelmed. Based on the reviews, I expected a superior trigger and accuracy. My gun is good, in both regards, but not great. It was very stiff initially, and is slowly breaking in, so I will give it some more time -- it is obviously well made, and the manufacturing tolerances account for the tightness. It is definitely reliable and does not seem to be sensitive to different types of ammo.

Nice finish although I may change out the grips for standard GI grips to save these laminated rosewood grips.

I shot it about 900 rounds and had no malfunctions at all. Fired it right out of the box after a simple disassemble and cleaning and oiling. Oh yeah, and I tried a group of ten cheapo mags I bought from Cheaper Than Dirt which are selling for under $6 each. As I said, no malfunctions at all. I don't know which I'm impressed with more, the R1 or the cheap mags!
Can you post the link to those specific mags?

hey guys, dont mean to bring up an old thread but the time is nearing for me to purchase my first 1911. i am heading up north for a shooting trip in four weeks so i gotta get one before then. im still leaning towards the R1 just because its a remington. should i be considering a rock island?

The R1 is all made here in the USA - specifically, all in NY state.

As far as I know, the Rock Island isn't - but they are a fantastic 1911, by all accounts.

You can't go wrong with either choice.

I recently purchased the R1 (non-Talo) and I have been very pleased with it. Remington did a nice job of keeping the original, classic appearance of the 1911 and incorporating some of the A1 (and later) modifications.

Winchester white box, or Federal work. Fairly inexpensive.

I can not speak for the base model R1, but I did buy an R1 Enhanced Model off of DD late last year. It is flawless and shoots dead on at 10 yards with 230 gr plated bullets. I shoot it better than my other 3 1911 pistols. It was a little tight the first outing but it is perfect now. I could not ask for a better priced or quality 1911 model pistol.

Oh yea, CONGRATULATIONS on your new R!.

Next, of course, you'll both need custom grips from Woodnut for your guns.

No custom grips for me. I prefer the original classic look.

I've seen pictures, and he does excellent work. It's just that I prefer the original classic look instead.

My brother in law just bought one this last evening and only saw the pics
of it. From what I saw on the Rem. web sight....NICE!
I hope to get his in my hands here in a few days and have a look...I may
be "sold" on my fisrt 1911? (and the price, IMO, isnt bad either, compared
to other's.)

I got a stainless about 3 weeks ago. First and only one I have seen. I have been pining over the R1 ever since I saw the first advertisement. I have had it to the range once and shot 50 rounds through it without a hickup. I was shooting a little low, but I do that with my Beretta as well. I worked on my grip and trigger squeeze/sight picture and my last 6 round group was at 6clock, bottom of the bull in about a 3-4 group at 25 yards. I think that is outstanding, especially for my first time with a .45, brand new. And the stainless, to me, is an absolutely beautiful handgun.
