SO, I have been putting stuff together for a while now for a "bug out bag". Mainly just incase our government takes a huge steamy crap, or if they decide to take away my precious guns... MYYY PRECIOUS! lol I'm sure some of you must have one. What do you have in it?
For me i got about 3000rnds of .22 a little .22 pistol, .22 rifle, some MRE's, packets of seeds, clothes, iodine tablets for water and a filtered water bottle with extra filters. matches, fire starter flint thingy, flashlights, lanterns batteries etc. total its all in 2 decent size bags, one duffel bag and one backpack. i am still building it up as i have some room to spare and still have it comfy to carry. Any suggestions?

Wow - ANOTHER LOTR fan, huh?
We took our grandkids (teens) to see each one as it was released in the theater, then we bought the collectors edition of all three of them - Have watched them SEVERAL times - Bug out bag? We don't need no stinkin bug-out bag! We now live in the toolies, a place I would want to bug out TO, but not FROM. I have everything here, including miles of armed hill-billies that have a natural distrust of the Guv'ment ever since the War of Northern Aggression. Cool place to be - -

I'm with several others on this site that have chimed in on the other BOB threads. I AIN'T GOING NO-WHERE. Everything I need is right here and I'll defend it from the rooftop if so needed.

Well, it's been a few months, and we had several different threads going about this issue. Now here we are in the last year of human existence (HA! LOL!) and there are growing numbers of folks who have decided we're not insane after all.
In scenario (A), "Hunker in the Bunker", it's food, water, and ammo. In scenario (B), "Gettin' the Hell Outta Dodge", you're moving either to another locale by vehicle, or getting out of the urban area as far as you can, meaning a few extra bags to get started when you get there. But if you abandon the vehicle, those items stay with the truck. In scenario (C), "Beat Feet", you're afoot and taking as much as you can reasonably carry. In scenario (D), "Run For Your Lives", you've dropped the ruck and it's guns, knife, and water. Basically a fanny pack/sling pack and weapons. In scenario (E), "Last Stand", you don't need any gear, and you're going to take as many of 'em with you as you can. Guns and ammo only. Here's a master list, culled from a lot of research, trial and error, and personal experience. Everyone's mileage will vary. GUNS AMMO FIELD CLEANING KIT KNIVES/MULTI-TOOLS 2-qt Canteen (military style) 2 Water bottles (metal), in ruck Ketadyn water filter TOILETRIES - toothbrush, floss, slivers of unscented soap Baby Wipes Hand sanitizer - small bottle 1 small Zorbeez or shammy Multivitamins First Aid Kit - whatever you got, it ain't enough. Get more. Neosporin & Quik-Clot. Bug juice Wet wipes, individual Moleskin Pocket Bible Pocket Declaration of Independence/Constitution Matches/Flint/Candles/Lighters RUCK Folding shovel Machete Wiresaw Folding camp saw Small prybar Duct tape Compact fishing gear Binoculars Compass 3 Flashlights (small LED style) Sewing kit (travel style, needles & thread) Solar survival blankets Pocket mirror Maps Goggles 2 Dust masks Knee pads Bivvy (pocket sleeping bag made from solar blanket material) Mosquito net (head cover) Scarf/shemagh Index cards & pencil Tarp Batteries Pocket string hammock Pocket camp stove with fuel tabs Stainless steel all-in-one mess kit Spork Tac gloves/Warm gloves Moccasins or slip-on shoes Rain suit Long Johns Socks, socks, socks Stocking Cap Large waterproof bag (main cavity liner) My BOB is a medium US Army ALICE pack, with frame. Everything on this list fits in the five smaller compartments, leaving the main cavity of the ruck for food. Most of these items weigh very little. As for food, it's Ramen, foil pouches of Spam and tuna, ziplocs of rice, salt/pepper/sugar/honey packets, crackers, instant coffee, etc. Absolute essentials should be in your pockets and in a fanny pack. VEHICLE: BASIC TOOL KIT Camp stove Propane bottles Cooking box (toolbox packed with utensils from the dollar store) Electrical tape Hatchet Small snow shovel Axe Shovel Push broom Bucket Funnel Siphon Gas Can Fix-A-Flat Jumper cables By the way - this is a starter list. It's not for everyone, and/or every situation. Plenty of folks have bows in their BOBs. I've built BOBs for several people and they've all varied depending on age, health, situation, etc. It also doesn't include BOW (Bug Out Wear?), the actual clothing you'll bug out in. With little warning, you might be hitting the trail in jump boots and jockey shorts - so your BOW should be right there with your BOB, from hat to boots. If you don't have any medium-weight rip-stop cargo pants, invest in some, along with some high quality socks and boots. Up top, it's layers of pullovers (Ts and jerseys, etc.). Most importantly, test it all out. Then keep it packed and ready - this can't be one of those, "Honey, did you get the bullets?" things. You can bet on this - the percentage of people who have given SHTF a minute's thought is a mighty small percentage of this country overall.

I think adequate food for you and your family should be the absolute number one priority. Pretty awesome list there Juker, seeing all kinds of items I never thought of, but would be very useful. This reminds me, I need some cargo pants.

A lot of the things on that list can be had at Dollar Tree and Harbor Freight Tools.
If you live in an urban area, you need a plan to get out. It's a fine thing to have visions of mowing down rows of zombies on the front lawn, but as soon as that starts, everyone in town will know you're there and you have guns, and probably food - and they'll be back in force. There are few urban dwellings that are truly defensible, whether from mobs on all four sides, or someone just setting a car on fire and running it into your front door, or lobbing molotov cocktails onto the roof. Get a group if possible, plan to get out, and recognize when it's time to go, BEFORE it's too late to go. Even if it's just out into the country, have a plan. The receivers won't leave the cities, and that's where it will be the worst for several weeks. The plan isn't to "go all Rambo" and fight our way out - the plan is to survive. Think Air Jordan riots, but they're all hungry and there aren't any cops.

The only reason I would have/want to bug out of my country place would be from nuclear/biological or chemical fall out heading my way to which I have a bug out vehicle ( M-35 cargo truck ) to bring along any essentials. The fuel tank on that truck stays full and that alone would give me a 350mile range and being 6wd I'm pretty sure I can get around any pile ups

What about a crank/solar powered radio? You'll need to keep up with all the zombie alerts.
