Savage .338 Lapua - The Firearms Forum

Im really wanting to buy one. I believe its a Model 11 Long Range Hunter. What do you guys think of this caliber? How much does it kick and sound compared to a .223 and a .270? I want to do some long range shooting and hunting but really just because I want one.

I think it would be a nice new family member.

Im sticking with Savage Arms for any rifle needs instead of any other manufacturer. I just fell in love with the company after I bought my
Savage Model 25 .223
A beautiful heavy gun. I dont understand why it said lightweight varminter when the gun weighs close to 9 pounds

Thanks Id like to some opinions. I think its a must.

9 pounds is light for a varmint rifle.

the .223 and .270 are nothing compared to the .338 lapua mag. Without a brake its comparable to the .338 RUM and kicks just a bit harder then the .338 win mag. Certainly not a toy by any means and not for the casual shooter. Ammo is crazy expensive and somewhat hard to come by too.

I wouldnt want to shoot it from a 9 pound rifle.

Ive got the Savage Model 12 BVSS in .223 Rem (varminter series) and with
the scope, "over" 12 Lbs.
Get a good rest and get the crosshairs where they need to be and it's a
one shot, one kill rifle.

Like Josh was saying, the ammo doesnt come cheap with the .338 and with the Sav. .223, factory ammo, Hornady...It costs me about .64 cents a shot.
(and the recoil feels like a HEAVY rifle in .22LR>)

Yeah Im going to stay with my Savage .223 I looked through prices for .338 ammo and thats a little bit out of my budget for just shooting targets and beer cans

If you want something bigger to reach out with, consider a .30-06.

A good friend recently bought the Savage 110 BA (Bad A$$) in .338 Lapua. Hornady ammo was 75 a box. Went through a few boxes and now rolling his own. Getting 3/4" groups at 200 yds so far, should get better as rifle breaks in and loads get developed. Thumps the heck out of our steel target at 800 yds also. An actual thump, not just the hit the gong sound we are used to with the .308s. lol. A little more rifle than alot of people have a use for.

Look on the gun auction sites
The last three guys I know who bought 338s (all were Savage) sold them with fewer than a hundred and one had fewer than 50 rounds.
They buy em and don't like em for whatever reasons (recoil) and expensive ammo and very quickly get rid.

So the auctions are full of them cheaper and very little use. And many of them will also be scoped already.

The latest caliber or gear is no substitute for experience and skill. Rifles and cartridges don't make hits -- shooters do. Fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!
