Default need help identifying 1911

HI.
I never owned a 1911 45 before, nor do I know anything about them. I always wanted on but never could afford one. Now the kids are all gone and on their own, I can save a little money.
I was just recently approached by a co-worker who asked me if I wanted his fathers Colt 1911 that was hanging in his closet. His father died a while back and his mother found it while cleaning out his old stuff.
He said his father had taken it back with him from the war, it also has the holster from then too.
My question is, are there any identifying marks I should look for.
What is a good price I should offer. He had mentioned $500 t0 $700.
Thanks
AL

I would suggest submitting good clear pictures with the serial #. These guys can tell you exactly what you have and what it is worth.....

If it is a government issue 1911 in reasonable working condition (no excessive pitting or rusting, etc.) it would be hard to imagine it could be worth less than he is offering it for.
It could be worth a good bit more. Serial# and good pics would be needed before a serious estimate could be made.

I have my dad's 1911 that he purchased surplus in the 50's and I would expect about twice as much for it (I won't be selling anytime soon).

Even a good description of the pistol, to include condition and markings, would be better than just a blanket - yeah its worth it or naw it ain't worth it!

BTW - Welcome to the forum.
