A lot of shooters say spot shoots are not a real competition they say it is just getting off a lucky shot. It is also known as, turkey shoot, board shoot, beef shoot, ect...
I think it is a competition, not like any Tactical Rifle Match or a .22cal Bench Rest Rifle Match is a competition. But it is a competition where you try to get as much shot to hit the target as you can this will raise chance of getting at least one piece of shot to land right in the middle of your razor blade + cut into the board. I compete in these locally, they are a lot of fun & it is a good fund raiser for the church org. I think that shotguns are good for something else other than clay shooting. Picture this, being able to hit center of a razor blade + cut in a board from 50 yards away. It wouldn't be that hard with a .22cal Bench Rest Rifle or a .223 Tactical Rifle but you are shooting a stock shotgun fitted with a turkey choke using Winchester AA heavy 7 1/2 shot. That is not so easy even it you can shoot 10 rounds at the target. Here is my 2nd place board from the last shoot, remember this is a 6"x 6" target, at 50yds it looks like a dot. The 2nd place winning shot is in the red circle it isn't dead center that's why it is 2nd, the green box is a winner take all side bet I didn't win that one. ![]() It is a lot of fun & I keep my freezer full of meat by doing this kind of shooting, this win put $150 of meat in my freezer. So let me know if you think this is a real competition or not?

No that is not a good target, I shoot in one club's match that this target wouldn't get in the top 10. Most shoots only give out 10 winning places.
If you want to watch this video (it takes a while to load) this is the major league of spot shoots, it starts at 8:00pm and goes to about 6:00am the next morning. Last time I shot in this competition I placed in 41st place with a target just as good as the one I'm showing. http://outdoorchannel.com/States/Ind...rT1jwLfc1qWArB For some reason this type of shooting doesn't get the respect it needs. |

"No that is not a good target"
OK, just practice more. We have a group in this area that spend a lot of $$ on shotgun mods to get them to group tighter. Some do and some don't. Some bad shots are contributed to wind and shooter error. They keep banging away but have fun doing it. And any winning target is a good one. |

turkey shoots are shear luck. no skill involved. you dont tell that pellet where to go. it goes where it wants and you just reap the benefit on a lucky hit.
answer is = no. |
