Default Manastash Ridge Shoot'n'Hoot 6/23/12

It looks as if we will have one this year. We got flooded out last year. Just received this from the guy who owns the property.

Quote:
Weekend of June 23

Road is still washed out and the F.S. (Forest Service) put in a new gate. I should have a key by then or the back way will definately be open. Hopefully all the familiar faces will make it and everyone is happy and healthy. It has been tooooooo long!

If you haven't attended before, contact me to get sign in instructions. We can handle about 20-25 people before we close the list.

It is held on private property up next to LT Murray Nat Forest. Camping is our big problem with a group larger than that. It is a bring your own sleeping space, potluck affair. We've been holding them for a number of years now and got flooded out last year just before the shoot. The roads were still closed for the annual Fall Work Weekend, too.

Do a search on "Manastash" in titles only and you will find some entries about past shoots.

Hey Pops, I have heard the road will still be closed for a few more months. Have you heard anything from anyone up there?

Last I heard from Bob is that the new gate is up and he is to have a key very soon. I haven't heard how good/bad the road actually is, but the boys have been up a couple of times. The back way is open, also. I'll keep you posted. It sure would be nice if you could make this one.

Sorry that's a pretty long way for me to travel from Wisconsin, especially while I'm in school during the summer.

Up the hill and South of Ellensberg, WA.

Private property, cabin, camping spots, shooting range up on the ridge, firepit, outdoor tables.

Bring pot luck food, drink, camping gear, guns you want to shoot/show off, and AMMO!

Just read Bob's latest: he does have a key, now. We will have to coordinate carefully, as cell service is very spotty and the gate can't be left open.

We need to know how many are coming and when arriving.

Latest on the road condition:

Quote:
Road is in good shape, a lot of river rock down by the old snow park but a majority of the bad stuff is ruts and bumps up by my place. I've seen Harley's conquer worse......

We'll get the gate figured out. I like the squirrel hole but haven't decided yet.

At the moment, ot appears like we have room for several more. Sorry not to be more exact, but things are not filling as fast as previous years. Probably people worried about low slung cars.

The biggest problem with numbers is camping space, There is room about 100-150 yards down the hill for a small camp trailer. There is limited room for tents, so that is the problem. Food, shooting range, room around the fire pit for truth-telling and food are not the restricting issues. There is a motor home, a cabin and parking for 4-6 tailgate campers at the cabin. There is room for about 4 to 6 tents (depending on size.) As nearly as I can estimate, we will have room for another couple of tents, 2 or 3 pickup bed campers, and 1 or two small camp trailers at the bottom of the driveway.

Let me know so I can pass along a count to Bob, as he tries to prepare enough food for about 1.5-2 times as many as have signed up. We have one or two pot roasts, bacon, eggs, some vegies, some salad stuff, two Bugs and something called "miscellaneous" signed up already. Water is always welcome as the crick is about half a mile down the mountain.

I'm really looking forward to this one. We got flooded out the week before the shoot last year and the roads were still closed for the Fall work weekend. I need my Manastash Ridge fix!

OK, at the most there will be 4 of us and just for the day since we all live here. I have some Tannerite left over from our shoot last weekend, can we bring it?

The only problem we have with Tannerite is when a couple of you guys get to arguing over whose batch to shoot first.

I'll tell Bob. It will be indeed to see you again and without a broken pickup, this time.

Latest update on road and gate:

polishrifleman wrote today (June 12, 2012) at 12:48 PM
The Gate is currently torn out. I will keep you posted on any changes to the current status but the locking mechanism is subject to change without notice. I also spoke with the Sheriff and notified them that we would be in and out over the weekend. Please print out on a 8.5 x 11 piece of paper in big font "Rocking H" and place it in your front windshield. This will allow the Sheriff and F.S. to know you are invited. It does not mean that you will not be stopped or potentially hassled. Please let them know that you are coming up to the Ranch to help with post winter pre summer clean up. I will keep you posted on the gate and access as I learn more.

Thanks,
Bob

This is the latest from Bob.

The gate has been replaced. Our old lock is still working, I am talking to the other owners to see if I can replace with a combo lock for the weekend. I will keep you posted. Otherwise we are going to do stages. First stage at 1pm second at 5pm etc... Those are not set times just examples.

I'm back from the weekend on Manastash. It had been way too long since I had seen old froends and made a couple of new ones. Marvelous weekend and I'm already looking forward to the "work" weekend in September or so.

Good shooting, good food, good (true) tales around the campfire, and good people makes for a truly marvelous weekend. Polishrifleman brought up his new 50 BMG and shot at the gongs I took up (worn and chipped farm discs.) 45 and smaller make a great "CLANG" when hit, but the 50 goes right through. The 400 yard one did show some splaying of the hole, but the holes in the 300 yard one were cleaner.

I took a pair of domestic rabbits up and baked them. They were very well received and a chef actually asked for my recipe.
