I hate to risk sounding stupid but what is a "tip off" base?

the Tip- Off® trademark produced by Weaver.

basically as i understand it they got a pile of gun makers to put grooves in the receivers of light sports rifles ( .22's mostly) for light scope mounts

the feet or clamps lock into the grooves

marlin model 783 .22 is one of them. thanks for educating me as well on this. now I know something about my scope rather than just + marks the spot

also note ( as i have just now done) , these are Chinese clones .. no "W" on weaver stamped into them , sheeeesh you get them there too ?

??? not sure, the gun is here getting stained, the scope is elsewhere. I know it a nice scope. deadly @ 100 yds easy!!!!

by + I was meaning the cross hairs mark the spot

I zoomed until it was blurry. there's something in front of the e... not sure if it is a w tho. looks like it, but cant tell 100%

these mounts were around long before the picatinny type mount came about

yep. they been milling 7/16 grooves in .22 recievers for dang near a century. Weaver pioneered the idea and branded it 'tip-off' mounts.

And those are what is mounting my 4X32 Bushnell Sportsview. had to go get it. Im nearing the finish line. my gun is early 80's and has the tales milled in it.

IIRC, the original Weaver mounts for CF rifles were also called "tip off" mounts because they could be removed by unscrewing the large screw and "tipping" the mount to remove it from the base. At that time, removing the scope from other mounts involved unscrewing one windage screw and then turning the scope or releasing a large wing type screw under the scope. Both were awkward and there was a risk of losing parts if the scope was removed in the field, so the Weaver type mounts were an advance.

I was having troubles finding scope bases for my old 10/22. lots of places list some version but no pictures. mine had the narrow long piece screwed onto the receiver and came loose at the range last time out. I figured while I was at it I might as well upgrade from the 4x20mm that came with it. I found a 4-16x50 for $70 at wally world but it takes the wide bases which I didn't have.

last night I was at wally world (again) and happened across the last set of weaver bases in stock and they are wide like I need. yeay me

so, narrow are called tip-off and wide are called picatinny?

Picatinny bases are called that because they fit the currently popular Picatinny rail used on many rifles, especially of the AR-15 type.

Now, guys, educate me. Where did that rail get the name "Picatinny"? I can't find any connection with the U.S. arsenal of that name, so where did it come from?

That's a good question Jim as I've myself, have been wondering about
that very thought for some time now and haven't found anything about
the word, "Picatinny/Picateeny"? (i've seen it spelled both ways under
differnt listings/companys/mfgs., not that "that" matters.)

The latest caliber or gear is no substitute for experience and skill. Rifles and cartridges don't make hits -- shooters do. Fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!
