Intresting little IDPA contest

One of the range officers came up with a little Home defense compition that he staged at the range this past Sunday.

He set up three sets of good guy / bad guy targets with the bad guy shadowing the good guy on one of them, and the good guy sadowing the bad guy on the other two. From a seated possition at a picnic bench, you have a latchable and also lockable box in front of you. There's two stages to this drill. First stage, you place a loaded mag into your pistol, with the chamber clear, and place the gun into the box and latch it closed. With your hands on your lap, you start at the sound of the timer....open the latched box, retrieve you gun, chamber a round, and start by firing two shots at the set of targets to your left...(both shots must land inside the Q of the bad guy target without hitting any part of the good guy target)...then two shots into the target to your right, then two more into the middle target, then drop the mag, clear the weapon and place it on the table....(the clock stops when your cleared weapon hits the table).

The second stage is much like the first, with the added ordeal of having the latch on the box locked with a cable lock, and your gun is placed inside with a loaded mag out of the gun. The sequence of fire is the same, and again the clock stops when your cleared weapon hits the table.
The two times are added up for your total score...

I missed second place by a tenth of a second.....

However, this drill got us thinking about a more elabrate stage for this type of shooting drill. But getting a bed, dresser, and night stand out to the range could pose a few logistical problems......

We had a stage a while ago where, after placing your charged pistol in a drawer of a nightstand, you were seated in an easy chair. Start position was your back had to be against the back of the chair, arms resting on arms of chair. Then get up and shoot through doorways, windows, etc. There are always hostages covering part of the perps body. Sometimes only a head shot is left. Sometimes we count shoot throughs on the bad guys, sometimes not. Depends on how hard we want to make the stage.

This is an inside range where we have LOTS of props to use. We can set up “low light” or “flashlight” stages. Something you can not usually do on an outdoor range. We also have a 90 degree muzzle rule inside. (180 outside) That is the one that gets called the most. Muzzle.

We had a VERY VERY low light stage last week. I missed 10 shots and shot 2 hostages and still managed to place third. It was a VERY HARD stage, but fun. Think I am going to like the "night sites" on the new pistol I am outfitting, for shooting comp.

We had a similar stage indoors where we used a bed with a soft mattress/boxspring setup. Gun in drawer with loaded mag but nothing in chamber. At buzzer get out of bed, retrieve gun, chamber round and engage two BG's. It was of course low light.
