I'm gonna say used is what you need, a high quality gun that has a well deserved reputation for reliability. any good sig, colt, Glock etc should work well. Your odds with a cheap gun go from a jury of twelve to carried by six! Find a good quality, gunsmith inspected used gun that fits your price range.

it might be of help if you would tell us what you are better at shooting,a revolver or semi-auto?if you cant shoot it,it dont do any good to carry it.most armed civilian confrontations are within 15 feet.buy what ever feels good in your hand and thats comfortable to carry.you may also want to consider the amount of ammo you can afford to buy before gun purchase.i would rather carry a 22 caliber pistol that i was proficient with, than a 9 or 380 or 38 that i couldnt afford to shoot. old semperfi

Rock Island Armory 1911. Slim. It's a .45 Auto so it gives you plenty of power. I own one and I think it's a great gun. And because it's a Government Model (5"), you don't have to worry about the reliability issues. The smaller ones like the 3 or 3 1/2" ones are the ones that usually have reliability issues just because of how they're designed. I love mine. Comfortable too. I paid $540 total for mine. But I'm also in anti-gun Wisconsin. If you're in a gun friendly state, I think you can easily find them for under $400 new. I trust my life to the same style gun that the US military trusted theirs to for years.

Well at 400 you will have a pretty good selection. Would go check out a few shops. Try some and see what feels good to you..........................

I agree that $400 can go a long way if you look at used. I have bought two good Sig Sauers with both of them being under $400.

There are lots of good choices. The Kahr CW9 is right at $400, and the Ruger SR9 can be had for just under. The Ruger P95 can be bought for right around $300 (some consider it large for CCW, but I don't). The Kel Tec PF9 and PF11 can both be had for under $300, and on the revolver side, you can get a new Ruger LCR .38 for $399.

Just bought my Glock 27 .40 caliber used (barely) for $450 for a savings of $500

It's very small, fits in my pocket, and shoots a big slug...

The G27 is an excellent pistol, but how do you figure you had a savings of $500 when you paid $450 for one?

I would agree that you need to determine which type of gun (pistol or revolver) that fits you best. There are several manufacturers in the $400 and under range, but the gun has to fit you and your needs. What works for me may not work for you. A good reference site to look a many makes and models is www.budsgunshop.com. However, it still comes down to what works for you.

Bud's is a good reference point, and right now they have new Glock 37 .45 GAP pistols for $379.

I paid $359 OTD for my Kel-Tek PF-9. I use std 115 gr fmj and S&W dry lubrication because it rides in my pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis and I don't want it to pick up stuff to get gummy. Few parts, mil-spec. Goes bang every time.

If you are a military active/retiree or LEO, you can order directly from Glock with fixed sites for $393. Once you place the order, it will be 10-12 weeks until delivery. Why you ask would it take so long: good question they build it. Yep they build it.

Or you can ask them for a Authorized Glock Distributor close to your AO. Picked up a glock 26 yesterday for $404 in Balto.

Hearsay. Plain and simple. I own 3 compact 1911s and have NEVER had a reliability issue. I probably shoot more than the average guy.

A lot of good advice but I would suggest going to a range and renting some small semi-autos and revolvers to see which one you can shoot the best and feel comfortable with. I don't carry because of the California gun laws. For home defense I prefer revolvers. I have two police service type 4 inch revolvers. I also have semi-autos to but only shoot them at the range. But thats me. You may be different. Its better to try shoots different types of guns and then decide which one is best for you!

Thats my take,

i've checked these things out and they seem solid and i've been told very reliable. check out the ez9 or the m88 from eaa. i presently have a m88 which is a single stack 9mm which is the same gun as a tokarev on order. once i get it and wring it out i'll report on it. but all indications from people in the know it's a winner.....

Right now J&G sales have used S&W .38 Specials for about 1/2 ($250ish) of your $400 limit, I'd give them a look. K frame S&Ws rarely give anyone any problems, especially in the mild .38 Special chambering.

So far you have received a lot of good advice. Years ago you just couldn't get a reliable semi-auto hand gun for less than $700 or $800, plus more dollars to get it set up, but times have changed some of that. It has been my experience these days that if you do buy one of the in-expensive hand guns, and it don't work right, your only recourse is to send it back, and then wait till they get it back to you. Most smiths won't work on them. I suppose I'm old school in that if I only had $400 to spend on a SD hand gun, I would probably go with the revolver. There just isn't much that can go wrong with one. Some of the newer revolvers, like Smith, and Colt cost more than $400 new, but can be bought used for that amount of money, and sometimes less. It's kinda like buying a Cadilac, the cost up front is high, and then there is still the maintance!

Brand new Taurus PT709 Slim, 9mm, 7+1, out the door with case and two mags for around $400. It's ridiculously small, and very easily concealable.

Compared to a PT92:

My PT145($369) and my Wife's PT111 ($349)
Have had Ruger P95, Glock G26,G27 and G36. The PT145 "feels" perfect and have shot
about 200 rounds without a single malfunction. Added a Lazerlyte mini laser and its
one that I have recommended to many friends and most have bought.
