A big bag is pretty cheap, and hot .22 loads blow them up nicely.
I will be honest, until recently I was not a safe shooter. I would shoot without muffs, plugs,or glasses. Didn't matter what caliber. I always grew up shooting with my grandpa, who didnt wear them either. i have since realized that is the reason you can hear the t.v. from two blocks away to this day. Since i have been teaching my nephews i have ear muffs and glasses for all of us.

I was also forced to paint a red line in the grass calling it the safe zone. They were so excited for all the targets I had trouble corraling them. I do have to say it really worked! I originally made my tailgate the safe zone but that was rapidly thrown out!!

Crossman sells small clay targets for BB guns that are biodegradable so no need to clean them up at all.

You shouldn't have any problems shooting at ice tray cubes, just be sure where the bullet goes after it goes through the cube. I was shooting at a steel target with a .22 revolver at 40 feet once, and somehow it bounced off the target i was shooting at and hit me in the gut. felt like a thump and i was shooting level with the target, no angle. could have been a lot worse if it hit me in the eye.

What a great testimonial for ALWAYS using shooting glasses AND don't forget hearing protection, even with a 22. It is especially important with new shooters as they need the example and young ears are very susceptible to lifetime hearing loss

What worked for me and my goddaughter was that i got her a shooting kit. Ok so i made one up for her. it has ear plugs, protective eyewear a small piece of carpet for a shooting mat, to set the pistol on at the bench, and a small bottle of oil. i then put the items in a small cloth bag with a label wth her name on it. when we go shooting, she's required to tote her gear along. No gear, no shooting or even watching from too clsoe. if she forgets the gear she has to wear the borrowed items from the range. she is a clean freak and hates wearing other people's stuff and learned real quick that this was not negotiable.

I like hanging nickels from a string. Very cool strike effect, and it takes an excitingly good shot.

Over Christmas my friend and I shot about 100 rounds fro his 10-22 at a frozen 1 gal milk jug from 25 yrds. no ricochet but a lot of shaved ice. Also might try hangin shotgun shells from yer rig they'd be hard to hit if there is a breeze.

Shootintg the blocks of ice is very dramatic compared to shooting a paper target.
