OK, I'm probably a baaaaad boy for this, but what started out as a news item worthy of debate turned into a rancid racist hate filled diatribe, I'd had had enough. I am going to post here the FaceBook racist rant, beginning to end, (it's not really long), and the link that started it all. The only posts not listed are a few of the original poster saying she didn't mean to start a war...she didn't, he did.
To save what little dignity he has left, he will be abbreviated to DJS, and I will abbreviate myself to AM. I do recommend reading/watching the link, very interesting story.

Arizona Town Enforces English Only Law
AM: Yes. This is the United States where the language of government is English. In her videotaped testimony, she couldn't understand basic questions. This does NOT mean in any way shape or form that she is stupid or unintelligent, but it DOES make you wonder why someone who is a citizen doesn't learn the language of her country? She should go to school, learn the language, and then return to politics - she'll probably get more votes for sheer determination if she does that! If she whines that the United States and the State of Arizona has to change to suit her, sorry, no. Want the rights of a US citizen? Remember the responsibilities and duties - how well would she do as a juror?

AM Look at in reverse - if I moved to a foreign country and became a citizen, would they let me run for office if I couldn't understand the difference between the words "where" and "when" in their language? I doubt it - of course, I've been wrong before, and will be wrong again. It IS the only thing I am consistent on.
DJS Wow racism at its best, what happened to amendment in our bill of rights freedom of speech and your passing judgment on the people who are native to the land, maybe you all should return to whatever european country yer ancestors came from, speak the language and live how they live, so live your own life and go back to germany polland and remember mexicans never hopped or jumped the border, the border hopped us !!!!!!!!
AM Dee Jay, try using logic instead of emotion - you'll get farther. You automatically throw down the race card in the beginning, biggest fail of logic, means you have nothing but whine to back it up. This country speak s English as the language of government, has since it was founded, and if that offends you, there's a border if 4 directions - hit it. By the way, I am a NATIVE here, sorry, check definitions. And as for Mexicans or citizens of other countries, (remember, Mexico is a country, NOT a race, Hispanic is the race, do try to remember those little points, please?), not "hopping" the border, the large number of Criminal Aliens in Arizona prisons begs to differ - 14% of the population, last check. Do remember the bottom most portion of the border was PURCHASED from The Empire of Mexico/Mexican Republic transitional government, partially as sop to the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo of 1848. Perhaps the political descendants of that organization would like to buy it back, at adjusted values?
Freedom of speech means freedom to say anything you want in political speech, but does NOT require anyone to listen. Mount your soapbox anywhere you wish, and say whatever you wish, nobody will arrest you and imprison you for doing so, but if I can't understand you because you insist in speaking a language not native to this continent, (Wonder why it's called Spanish...like maybe it's from a European country called Spain?), then you point will automatically fail to accrue listeners. Instead of blindly screaming "RACIST", perhaps you should learn history. By the way, why are so full of hatred towards Germans and Poles, are you some sort of RACIST?

You can't spell or use proper punctuation, so I have to assume your education is lacking. As for your answers, which you probably don't want anyway, Hispania was the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula, which later became Spain, where the language Spanish came from. Also you forgot the small matter of a war between the Empire of Mexico, (remember that Treaty I referenced? Go back and look again, I'll wait.), which was settled when American forces occupied Mexico City, and the price of losing a war was loss of territory, the same way the Aztecs and other bloodthirsty "natives" of what would be come modern Mexico expanded their lands . The purchased part was a deal between the fledgling Mexican Republic and the US, called the Gadsden Purchase, aka Venta de La Mesilla, after the war, and the people who were told to move were told by the Mexican government, who sold the land. Last show me one death camp in the United States, to which I am native born, no matter how much you can't understand that simple fact. Nobody in my background ever operated a death camp, while yours apparently tore the living hearts out of human sacrifices to pagan gods...and you ask what my ancestors have done to humanity? Next time you "call it like you see it", might want to check what it is you're looking at first.

i've been up against them here , i was called a racist by some bimbette ( not enough brains to be a full on bimbo ) and then got lectured on Koori rights and such and when my koori friend stepped in to correct the girl the koori lady was attacked as a slave of the white race and told to get back in her cage before her white boss got upset

JC is the young lady who posted the news story in the link at the top of the quoted area, and that's all she did, no personal dialogue with it. DJS is a guy with a small mind. Watch the video of the Arizona town who dared to tell someone they have to speak English to run for Mayor - she couldn't tell the difference between "where" and "when" in videotaped testimony. Not a good idea. As I suggested, the lady in question should go to school and learn English, and will probably pick up votes on both sides for showing sheer determination!

I would have given up early on, as I've come to realize that arguing with liberals (or just your average moron) is like playing chess with pigeons, you can win hands down and they'll still stomp and crap all over the board for no reason... unable to use rational thought.

On a side note, I am of Hispanic descent, I'm not quite sure why it is considered a "race", I had this argument with a census worker once... the poor guy was sorry he ever knocked on my door, I swear I didn't do it maliciously but in my view, there are only three distinct races: black, white, asian... everyone else is a mix of those. I am fish-belly white so you couldn't really tell that I'm of Hispanic heritage, but anyway, I got sidetracked here, that's a discussion for another time.

Bottom line: You come here, you want to run for government? speak English! I did it, it's not that hard.

MommaGrizzly, next time you fill out a 4473 note there is a special section now for Hispanics on there. Hispanic I would hazard a guess would be the meld of Spanish and Indio, perhaps, considering the considerable influence of Spain in the region? Derived from the Latin Hispania, perhaps also leading to the term Latin America?
All I know if almost all the persons of Hispanic descent I have met down in Nogales Arizona were wonderful people, and have worked for some, as well - my last boss is actually a Mexican citizen on her green card working for her citizenship. Her English and knowledge of history is better than mine.

I do agree, there is a some racist feelings coming out, and nobody seems to have heard of Ricci vs New Haven, that established in law that there is no such thing as reverse racism, that racism is racism, whether white on black, black on white, or purple on green.

I had a lady at the imaging center ask me my race on monday...... She was probably kidding but it po'd me. I am not ashamed of my roots but I look, speak and act like a white boy. My surname is Spanish, my Grandfather got his citizenship and spoke English. Nothing worse than getting mail and phone calls in Spanish....IMHO.

Caneman, I am actually speculating out loud, but it certainly makes sense on the origin of the word. If the Spaniards had not arrive and made such a difference in the lives on Montcezuma and other native peoples, perhaps the country we now know as Mexico might be completely different.
To those who say we should give it back, I have a simple answer - I was born in Arizona, this is my home state, and I will fight to keep it free. The mechanism for a state to renounce it's statehood doesn't exist, (since 1865, that is), so it'\s not legally possible. That would mean it would have to be taken by force, and I think I speak for a few people when we caution that may be a bad idea.

Raven, of course they want it back - it's worth far more than when it was acquired, either by force or purchase.

Problem is, we could only give back what we own - who's going to make the Chinese give up what we sold them?
