Carver, be very careful with that assumption. I have witnessed and have personally pulled the trigger (unintentionally of course) on rounds that have cycled the slide without any powder. The only indication was the sound and the reduced recoil.

I would like to add a warning also, A revolver will still cycle with a squib or a dud whatever you want to refer to it as.

I have seen a barrel that was cut in half after someone fired a squib and followed it up with additional shots. There were five bullets wedged into the barrel, neatly compressed against each other. The barrel was bulged but did not rupture.

I have only seen one squib/dud where somebody shot another bullet behind it. I was an RO at a GSSF match at our club and the guy shooting had a squib/dud. The slide locked and before me or the other RO could stop him he racked another round in and shot it. He ended up with a bulged barrel and nothing more. I figure he was pretty lucky.
