I was mistaken on the model of shotgun I bought it is a mossy 550ABC.What is the difference between the 500 and the 550?When I was loading it today I read the numbers on it and it says M550ABC on it.

Weve been shooting a whole bunch and the 12 hasnt bothered me or my son.I think it also has to do with how you mount the gun.And these 23/4 shell,A 12 guage slug is a different story.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I just purchased my first shotgun. It a Stoager Couch 12 Guage side by side. I haven't fired it yet. Some of my best memories when I was a kid, was watching coyboy movie. But it was the stagecouch chase, and the shotgun the couchman carried.

What can I say, I'm a romantic. LOL Back to reality, I have no idea on what 12 gauge light target ammo to use for just target shooting. Any helpful info would be appreciated.

As for other guns I have... Thompson Contender, with 4 14" barrels, a nice 30.30, a 357, 45, and a HoRnady 458Lott 500Gr for those long shots.
I also have a Smith and Wesson 38 snubnose.

Any help on the shotgun would be helpful. Thank you in advance

Rocky

Welcome to the forum Rocky. What kind of targets are you shooting at. Clay's, Paper?? I am new to Skeet and trap but bobski has been a lot of help.

For clay's use 2 3/4 #8 shot. If you want to limit recoil look for the 2 3/4 or under dram loads. I just found this out myself.

1 oz of #8 will crush just about anything at the skeet/trap range, I use it for skeet, wobble, 5 stand and trap even. 1 1/8 is great too but more recoil.

I bought a stoeger side by side a few years ago, not a bad gun; the only drawbacks as a defensive shotgun is that it has separate triggers and goes back on safe after reloading. also, most side by sides have a modified and full choke barrels in them (fixed). first shot is mod and second is full. (or something similar, skeet/mod, etc...)

a stoeger coach is pure kick. if you plan on using it a lot, you may want to save up for a doctor visit.

Congrats on the new shotgun.

I have learned that how one shoulders the shotgun is important to recoil. It is important to have the butt in the perfect place as opposed to the size of the shooter. My uncles were linebackers in college and I can handle 12 gauge slugs better than they can. They have atleast a good 50 lbs on me.

all the proper shouldering wont help a gun thats light and designed poorly. and add to it, improper choice of shell.

I hunt w a pump but all my skeet shooting is done w auto. Baretta 391 Parallel Tgt. Pumps just pound the shoulder - mounting will not help. Proper fit helps you hit more birds. Stock design, gun weight, modern recoil pads, are all factors.

Enlongated forcing cones, mercury weights, barrel & choke tube porting are more controversial but generally accepted as recoil reducers.
