Can any one estimate where it will be at 40 to 70 yards? Shooting a Marlin .22 mag rifle, Hornady .22 magnum 30 grain bullet, temp is 70 degrees, rifle is micro grooved, and at 30 yards it is dead on, ie .25 inch circle. Only looking for a guesstimate of what it will do at 50 yards, out to 70 yards. Using a 9 power scope. I'm not looking for exacts, just a "it should be" estimate.
Next weekend I should be able to go to the range, but tomorrow my farmer friend has complained of a wood chuck problem and I was hoping to get out there. Figure I have a good spot to hide between 40 - 70 yards from where the varmit is coming out, and tonight was able to zero in at 30 yards. thanks fred

I believe it will be higher as the bullet rises. Just place the cross hairs a bit lower then you don't have to mess around trying to chase the round. Good hunting!!

The answer to your question is mainly dependent upon you sighting system. That is to say do you have low mounted open iron sights that has the top of the front sight about 0.5" above the center of the bore; or do you have a big scope mounted on the rifle with an optical axis that is over 2.0" above the center-line of the bore.
For a real life example, a .22 LR target pistol equipped with a 1" tube diameter red-dot sight will typically have its optical axis about 1.45" above the bore center-line and shoot to the same point of impact between 50' and 50 yards with target ammo. The same pistol set up for a "6 O'clock Hold" in US Bullseye shooting using iron sights, will print 1.5" high at 50', 2.75" high at 25 yards (or 1.25" higher), and 4.0" high at 50 yards {or 2.5" & 1.25" higher than 50' and 25 yards, respectively}. The foregoing probably does not help a lot other than to demonstrate that you need to actually check your rifle, sight system, and ammo at various ranges that you will shoot at. There are some tables for some arms, ammo , and sight axis distance above bore center-line published by some ammo manufacturers and the military. You might try searching the Internet. |
