Hey guys,
Im not sure if this is the right forum to post this in. If it's not, I apologize. Anyway back on point. I am in the market for a new 22LR. I currently own a Squires Bingham Model 20A and it was beat to hell and back before I got it. I am in the market for a new .22. Before I got the Squires Bingham from my uncle, I was considering a Ruger 10/22. I have heard good things about ruger firearms and anybody I talk to who owns them, Seems to be pretty pleased. My next choice if I didnt get a ruger would be a Henry Repeating Arms lever action .22. I again have heard great things about Henry Firearms and I like the old style look. My last choice would be a Smith and Wesson (or similar.) 15-22. I more or less like these for the Tactical look and accessory options available to add onto it. I understand everybody has their own opinion, and Honestly thats what I want to hear on each of these 3 brands of 22. I would hate to spend 300+ on a completely synthetic .22 rifle just because it looks cool and has alot of add on options like scopes, a second handle, and a fold down stand. Would I be better to go with a brand like Ruger or Henry? Like I mentioned, I like the tactical .22's, I just hate to spend $300+ on a plastic gun that was pretty much only bought because it's "bad ass" and has alot more add on options than a Ruger or Henry.

Big D , from what i have seen the ammount of after market stuff for the 10/22 is amazing
i've recently met a couple disabled vets who partnered with a company to make tacticool type gear for it and have a kit to make a M-4 10-22 or M-1 carbine or ultra stock hunter that alone is a big reason plus the ruger is a decent reliable platform you can with ease ( and cost) have 3 rifles or 4 , in one .. ( relocated this to the .22 specialist area ) |

Nothing on the market today can compete with the Ruger.

With a 10/22 you can do this and it shoots like a dream and is built like a tank. I have a Marlin and Browning lever action as well as a 10/22 and a Marlin model 60, but the 10/22 is by far the most versatile.

You can go a million miles from Sunday......
This one, that one, lever, bolt, semi-,short, long, pistol,...... all in all, the things available for a 10/22 are only limited by your wallet......you can turn a simple $200 rifle into a $2000 work of art ![]() ![]() ![]() OR...... you can keep it stock and have a hell of a nice carbine..... ![]() ![]()

The Ruger 10-22 should be issued to every citizen at the age of 18. Everyone should have one.

I know this is probably a stupid question... But if I were to buy a Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60 from Walmart or another store that can legally deal in firearms, Would they include a Mag in the sale? Or is a mag something I'd have to buy seperately?

The Marlin is a tube fed, so no Magazine required, The Ruger 10/22 comes with the Manufacturers 10 round Magazine.
There are numerous after market Magazines for the 10/22 |

I have a 10/22 but my marlin was more accurate...Model 60 would hang in there with the best of them.

Rcairfl - Thank you for clearing that up for me. I remember back when I was searching for a mag for my Squires and Bingham that they mags with a capacity of 25 rounds. Is there a particular brand or sizes of mags that do and do not work or dont fit the .22? Or does that revolve around what Brand and Model 22 I decide on?

Love my 10/22, but lately I have been shooting some low powered (quiet rounds) that I have to cycle myself and I get a lot of stove pipes on the 10/22. So when shooting the quiet stuff I grab my Savage Mark II. For the money it is a great rifle IMO.

I love my Savage mark II amd when I want tactical I shoot my 15-22. Hard to beat a 10/22, but I'm very happy with my set up.

I like the 10/22 and the Marlin 60, but last weekend my BIL brought down his Ruger 10/22 and we got set up on the bench.
His 10/22 and my 60 and we tried different brands of ammo through both of them following each other, 5-10 shot groups. They BOTH done very well but with shooting CCI Blazers, they both ate them up. As far as accuracy, who's to say as to who is the better shooter, as I sometimes cant seem to hit the broadside of a barn. However, the Marlin Model 60 was a bit more accurate.

I've hesitated to comment because I don't recommend the 10/22... unless you are able to add hundreds of dollars to the initial price to make it accurate. Out of the box, the average 10/22 has a horrible trigger and will often pattern like a shotgun. I've shot many, many stock 10/22 rifles and my experience has not been favorable.
Having said that, here is a group I shot yesterday with a 10/22 I modified about 10 years ago. Green Mountain barrel, Boyd stock, extended mag release. re-worked trigger, Leupold base & rings, and a Simmons 3-9X32 AO scope. 10 shots at 50 yards with CCI Standard Velocity ammo. The dime will hide the whole group. ![]() So the 10/22 CAN be made to shoot but at quite a price in most cases. (I modified a second one that is just as accurate if not better.) My suggestion is to buy a CZ-453 Varmint rifle. It's a bolt action with a single set trigger. Not cheap but worth every penny and it will hold it's value MUCH better than a modified 10/22. Here's what my CZ-453 American did at 50 yards and my Varmint version is better. Four shot groups with one shot to determine average diameter of the bullet hole to subtract from edge-to-edge readings. Ammo was inexpensive Federal 510; less than $20 a brick. ![]() If you must have a semi-auto, then consider the CZ-512. Those who own them claim superior accuracy for a semi-auto and, again, they'll hold their value. CZ rifles are built to a quality that guarantees they will become family heirlooms with any reasonable care. Your money; your choice. |

However, I'd suggest you look at some of the non-autoloaders, just for a change of pace. I like my Marlin Model 39A leveraction 22. |
