Default Pre '64 Winchester Model 88 .284 value

I have recently purchased a very nice pre'64 model 88 in .284. This gun has almost no marks anywhere on it. I don't know if it has ever been fired. The gun came with 3 full boxes of original winchester .284 ammo and an extra clip. I don't know what the gun is worth or what would be the best way to go about selling the gun. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Would like to see pictures of your rifle. I just had a rifle gone over in this caliber. Beware of the recoil! Mine kicks like a mule.

Ammo is not easy to come by, so save your brass. If you know somewhere to find easily, let me in on it. Make sure it is a 284, not one of the wildcat rounds made from this case (about 8 different that I found). Your boxes of ammo the 140 or 150g? Have read online go up to 170g.

I have no idea about it's value, sorry.

Phil

While I cant speak to an "exact or approximate value" for you rifle, I will tell you what I know - 10 years ago when I WAS "up" on Winchester 88 values, you couldnt touch a "clean" Model 88 in .284 for less than $1500 and the extra clips alone in .284 were going for the better part of $100, AND the ammo is getting expensive for sure - so, at that time you were probably looking at $1700 for the rifle, extra clip and ammo, and I would think that they have only gone up from there. I would suggest you check "buy it now" prices on auction sites and Guns America's "asking prices" for an APPROXIMATION of a reasonable value present day. Just some food for thought/suggestions that I hope may help.

OH, some more Win 88 info, if I remember correctly - the least common calibers are obviously the .284 and the .358 and all calibers were not produced all years - IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY the .358 was an original caliber and was discontinued in 1964, so there was only 1 year of POST 64 .358's, and the .284 was INTRODUCED in late production 1962 which means there are only a year and a half of production of PRE 64 .284's which would IN THEORY make a pre-64 .284 a VERY limited production, as would be a post-64 .358. Anyone more fully informed than me with respect to this PLEASE CHIME IN.................

I inherited my dads model 88 .284. I would love to more about it.
I have passed several of my dads reloads through this gun and I love it, but the ammo is hard to find -AND- parting with my hard earned cash is even harder.
I also got his reloading equipment, in that were several books dated into the 70's they are still helpful... After this Deer season I'm finally going to sit down and learn a thing or two about reloading, (I wish I had paid more attention when he was trying to show me as a teen).
If any one in the Vegas area has a place that carries Winchester .284 ammo Can you please let me know?

Brent,

That rifle is worth a minimum of $2500, not including the extra magazine and the 3 boxes of factory ammo. I too would like to see pictures of it.
