Ok, I'm not much into shotguns but I thought all shot loads were carried down the barrel in some sort of plastic cup gizmo so the shot did not touch the barrel or is there some other issue here I am not up on?

Barrel is fine, it's a new shotgun so if you have a choke it will be a modern choke with a long throat specifically designed for steel shot. What I have seen so far are M, IC and cylinder bore, you are good to go. If you are still unsure pull the choke out and look up the manufacturers specifications for it.
