Default Short 9mm makarov brass

I recently purchased 1000 9mm range brass. As I was sorting through it I found that the Makarov brass is shorter than normal 9mm brass. As luck would have it I only found about (15) pieces of the short stuff. All the brass was in great shape except for maybe (10) cases. The over all count came to 1132 pieces of brass. Have any of you ever measured the length of Makarov brass?

Measured it? Not really. It should be around 18mm, and just a
touch fatter than 9x19.

I've certainly cursed it quietly a few times when loading 9mm.
It will make it clear through the process, only to be found when
case gaging ammo for a match. I can feel the .380's as
different in the sizing die---but not the Makarov.

It's a minor issue--not nearly as curse worthy as small primer
45 ACP.

Yup. 9x18mm Makarov brass is 1mm shorter than 9mmx19mm Luger (Parabellum) brass.

The 9x18 uses a slightly larger bullet .364"-.365" as opposed to the "standard" 9mm bullet diameter of .355"-.356". And as Bill noted, the case is straight and not tapered like the 9x19...but the case head is nearly identical diameter.

Based on the way he said what he said, I'm wondering if Deacon Man thought that it was all 9mm Luger, and that "makarov" was a brand, like CCI or Remington.

Re-reading the post...I bet you're right.

I know it's easy enough to get 9x18 mixed in with 9x19 with range pickup brass. They feel darn near identical so you gotta check em closely. I stand all of my 9mm brass neck up in a flat tray and pick the shorties out...most are 9x18 but a few .380s sneak in sometimes too.
I usually have to pick a few dozen 9x18 out of every 200 or so that I forage up at our local range. Luckily, most of it is steel case and the magnet will get em but we do have a couple local shooters that must use brass 9x18 because I do police up some of their empties every so often.

As a Makarov shooter who RELIGIOUSLY picks up all his S&B brass at the range I take offense...

(the steel cheap stuff I shoot in the backyard and dull my lawnmower blades with, but that's another story...)

I get PO'ed when I find the LONG stuff in my brass at the range!

Of course, I am saving all of them I find on the off chance someday I might actually own one of those "too big to carry for a round so little better than my pocket Maks" Parabellums...

My only complaint is that the Makarov throws the brass into next week.
Have you found away to keep them close by so you collect them?
Thanks

Shoot with a shoebox stapled to the table next to your gun..
