Remington 770 upgrades

Hey all,

I bought a remington 770 in .30-06 yesterday. I've not even fired it yet . But I was wondering what if anything I should have done to it?

My main purpose for this will be plinking, and may deer/hog hunting. Oh and sniping zombies when the apocalypse happens

Trade it in for a rem 700.

I bought one a couple of years ago, just "because". It was a good price. I don't like the plastic trigger guard, but mine was a dead-on shooter from the get go.

ive got a little experience with two different 770s, and the '06 would shoot under an inch at 100 yds with plain ol Core-lokt ammo, and the .243 patterned like a shotgun, no matter what load we used. go figure

not a lot of upgrades available for the 770 , put a scope on it and shoot it, if you like it good then you don't need to change anything, if you don't like it take it and trade it on a Rem 700 or a Savage 100/110 or Stevens 200, you can upgrade those as much as you would like

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Most of all though is just enjoy the gun.

Is it that bad or just lacks the ability to be customized easily?

They are entry level hunting rifles expressly made for the budget minded shooter/hunter. They arent designed, nor intended to be shot regularly. Every single rem 770 and 710 I have put my hands on has had sloppy bolts and poor fit between the action and stock. Your money is much better spent on a Rem 700 or a Savage 10/110 IMO. They arent that much more expensive and are 10 times the rifle.

Alot of the reason I believe the 710s and 770s sell as well as they do is because they almost all come as rifle/scope combos. Most seasonal hunters are well served by the low end optics they come with as most never shoot much further than 100 yds in the field, and only shoot the rifle once or twice a year.

Not that they are junk, they will get the job done, but comparing what you get for an extra 150 bucks, my opinion is to get the better rifle and have a solid set up that will easily last a lifetime of regular shooting.

I totally and 100% agree with what JLA posted.
If your going with the rifle as just hunting purposes and as said, most
people wont shoot much past 100yds, a nice rifle for the purpose.
And as said, the bolts seem abit "sloppy" as far as locking down compared
to the 700's or the Savage rifles.
For a hunting rifle as stated, nice!

I bought one in a 7mm-08 for my son ( 11yrs old ) for a first gun i figured its black and plastic he cant screw much up on it and Gander MTN hadnt changed the price yet so i got it for 278.00. The scope sucks so i would suggest maybe changing that.

Just break it in well. My wife's .243 is starting to develop a pretty nice feel. A lot of people hate on it, but it's a pretty solid gun for the price. Has a long action and a heavy chamber, so it should last a while and take some abuse.

I just listed CNC aircraft aluminum magazine release buttons for the Remington 710/770 on EBAY since the OEM part seems to break regularly.
