Default Prepping; food for thought.

Like a lot of you I am putting up some things I think I might need if something should happen, like the dollar failing. I was thinking about the everyday things in our lives that we take for granted, and would be sorely missed if we had to do without them. Things like toothbrushes, disposable razors, and after shave. We have talked about the important things like food, clothing, shelter, and a means to protect what we have. Something simple like a can opener would be valuable to you, and possibably to your neighbors as a trade item. The same for the toothbrushes, razors, and after shave. A pack of 5 Bic disposable razors cost about $2, and the shelf life is unlimited. What about some other ideas?

all those type items will be luxury items long term , but your talking break down of society scenario to get to the tooth brush and can opener stage , dollar falling will just see imports become luxury n ( yeah cheap chinese toothbrush $5 ) folks have them and they'll last at least 30 days which is about as long as any emergency should last ( i said should and also saw Katrina )

short term toilet paper is a biggy everyone should have 2 months worth in the house and it has other uses

government globalist emergencies are done on the drip .. look at the history of them ( induced shortages and currency failures argentina and other south american places a good place to start inflation 1200% a month

for obamanomic's maybe a look at how folks did under robert mugabe , Zimbabwe

2400% inflation a week

past that look up how folks did in soviet russia as thats the long term plan for the USA

economically speaking

repress option and choice

repress resistance , as folks wont risk further reducing supply and choice by upsetting big brother

evereyone by this time are good comrades standing in the line to get bread for 2 hours ( the complainers in re-education camps or shot ), they get bread , maybe some sausage , some cheese , today and tomorrow they do it again ..

I will admit that a fallen U.S. currency might be a drip, but I also think that it could be much bigger! Bigger in that those who are not prepared will try to take what they need form anyone they think might have something. Marshall law, and big government installed, and even if the "cheap chinese toothbrush $5", and other items are available in some stores, how do you get to the store to buy them when gas is $15 a gallon, and you have no money? Or your new vehicle is broke down, and you have no way to fix it? America is a great place, and with lots of natural resources, I don't think things will be real bad for a long peroid of time, but when the dust settles it won't be the America we all know, and love!

Hand tools is one of my weak points. I have enough for my own use, but haven't given any thought to having extras for trade. Good ideas! I have hand augers (drills), but lack a good supply of bits for them.

-food; spam, top ramin, dehydrated potatoes, they last longer than you might think!

-lighting; if there is no power some type of lighting will make a huge difference, I have a few solar lanterns, and I also have a solar backup battery system with dc lights

-water filter; you can buy some water filters or make them with gravel/sand/activated carbon/screen materials/buckets

-energy; something to cook and boil water with, i have a spare bbq propane tank with a small proane burner on it that a frying pan or pot can be placed on top of it, a 5 gallon backup can of gas as well

-heat; a gas heater is nice, i have a chord of fire wood as backup, and some dc electric blankets as well

-cooling; some dc powered fans (run on car battery or solar power) or battery powered, long term i am going to get a small ac unit and run it off solar power

-energy; this requires more time/effort but if you have a generator on hand or a solar system it will help a lot (charge cell phone, use radio/tv/laptop, run coffee maker, washing machine, etc.)

-real money; at least have some cash on hand just in case the internet goes down for a week at a time and you can't get any (maybe $500 to $1000 on hand), and if you are pessimistic about a currency devaluation like i am you can get some junk silver coins

-toiletries; tampons for the ladies, toilet paper, and soap all come to mind first

-bullets; self defense and bartering

+1 for TP, job isn't finished 'till the paperwork is done!

Solar energy is something I wish to have, reduces the need for fuels and provide simple comforts such as lighting, cold storage, etc. You could charge (pun intended) people a trade for some of your power.

Water purification

But the little things, there are so many to think about. Cookware and utensils for preparing food; may need different types if you have to change your heat source. Is that nice teflon pan gonna hold up on a campfire? stuff like that. Clothing is important; socks and good boots are my priority, gotta have good happy feet.

toilet paper that is a luxury.
when i was a kid i remember using paper from the catalog. for you city slickers, dont use the pretty shiny pages
can opener. nah. good quality knife will do the same. find a nice sand rock to sharpen it
vines that are green is the same as rope .
i could go on, but i have no intention of leaving my home., so i have everything here i need. IF IT GETS THAT BAD I HAVE NO DESIRE TO LIVE ,
and i have a plan for that

If the can isn't rusted thru, or compromised in any other fashion. It is not swollen, or bulging. Then it's still good 20, or more, years after the expiration date.

Carver,

Good thread. Guns and ammo to start with.

One thing that people don't think of is cleanliness. Have enough scentless baby wipes that everyone in your house hold can bath daily for several months, maybe even longer. They just need enough wipes daily to clean themselves. Disease would hit hard in the first several month's because people would be without showers, flush able toilets, and no hand washing. People will be vomiting and even worse, diarrhea issues widespread. With all that you will want to have a way of remaining clean. Like I say baby wipes, mouthwash, toothpaste, rubbing alcohol, bleach, things like that.

Water, as much as you can put back. Bleach for sterilizing water. Use of bleach in water can be researched on line.

Food. A dutch-oven can go a long way. Put back several 5 gallon seal able buckets with charcoal, charcoal lighter, and a dutch oven. Research on how to store flour, and keep butter frozen. Keep salt, baking powder, and canned fruit stored handy. Without power, it is simple to bake a cobler and other high carb foods that the body requires for survival. Jack404 has an excellent bread recipe here that is filling and easy, and it goes a long way. A dutch over will provide heat for cooking for hours after the first recipe is done cooking and it provides heat for survival.

Propane barbecue. Pretty straight forward. Several propane bottles. keep them full and rotate them. When you empty one make it a priority to get it refilled.

Foods: Beans, rice, canned veggies and fruit, canned stews, etc. A big one is Spam and tuna. You can eat either one cold. Have enough food to go 3 months minimum.

Salt, lots of it. Any meat in the freezer can be made into jerky for protein.

I save my old pants and shirts, and of course I always keep several pairs of old shoes along with what I presently wear. Coats, sweaters, hoodies, whatever.

Bedding is a big one. If you can't wash it, you need to be able to have qack up bedding.

Flash lights and batteries. Generators are nice but they make noise and invite thieves and not everyone can afford one. Try to acquire quiet lighting alternatives.

Generator and fuel. Even though it's noisy, use it wisely.

A pellet gun. It is quiet for shooting food like cats, dogs, squirels, and other animals that can be eaten. All becomes food.

Lastly, more guns and ammo and trust worthy friends with the same priorities.

I am sure there is more but my list is the jist of it.

The ability to live on less, almost self sufficiency; with the security of living in an area where you are safe and can survive. Everything else, you are just playing games and limited by a few months of using what supplies you have squirreled away; no joke.

You are correct if the person has only squirreled away a few months of supplies. The SHTF next month, and you are going to plant a garden when? And what if it doesn't produce enough food? What if you get hit with no rain for a couple of months? With what I have, and what I can produce, I'm good for well over a year. Food, water, clothing, shelter. This is all you need to survive if left alone. Guns, and ammo, is for when other folks want to take what you have. Everything else is for trad/barter, and luxuary. Where I live wood is plentiful, cooking can be done over an open fire, but you had better know how now. If you have never cooked over a fire, a SHTF scenario is not the time to learn! The same applies to fire making skills. For those of us out in the sticks a wood burning heater is the perfect item to have around. A good wood burning smoker/grill will come in real handy! A wood burning stove will not only will provide you with heat, you can cook on it just like a stove. Something like this one can be had for less than $150, depending on where you buy it.

One thing we have that i have extra on hand.
That no one is talking about. and that is Rx.
some you can keep on hand some you can't.
just a thought.

One more thing about the stove.
just like castiron cookwear, they need to be seasend. Do it out side.
TRUST ME. It stinks the first few fires, and smokes.

I have one too. I used it for a few years in the house, but the wife wanted the piano in the living room so the the stove had to go! It is now out side under a roof, but still gets used during the winter months when I have to be out doing anything. If I remember correctly these heaters put out about 90,000 BTU.

Lamentations Chapter 5:
1. Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
2. Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.
3. We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers [are] as widows.
5. Our necks [are] under persecution: we labour, [and] have no rest.
16. The crown is fallen [from] our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!
21. Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
