Oh the things I tinker with...
![]() Springfield/Stevens side by side double 12 Ga.... any one know what model? Here are pics of the receiver and the markings... As I looked around the thing.. I noticed that all the S.N.'s matched... and if you think the receiver is rough.. the rest looks the same. Bores of the barrels look good though.. a few cob webs. Any info on the model would be great, thank you, Shawn Dow

And finally... my ramblings will stop... The receiver (frame) is not blued.. thats just dirt, grease, and rust! The barrels and trigger guard are the only things blued.

Im thinkin its a Stevens 311, or well a predescessor thereof.. Stevens quit using the springfield name circa 1948 so its older than that. Im bettn the tang length will match up with the stevens 311 hammerless and all the parts will be interchangeable.. Its only worth about 150 bucks tops so theres really no reason not to shoot it.

The tang is the strip of metal that the rear stock screw goes thru. the barrel latch lever sits on top of it..

Well, it needs a good scrubbing, and Id like to clean up the exterior of the barrels...(rust bluing?) and the safety "lever" slide is missing, need one! thats why i'm after a model #. I know the ols SXS cant be hot tanked
so I need to do something with it. My co worker who owns it wants to turn it into a "wall trophy". Poor thing... I think its begging to pop off a few rounds before I return it! ![]()

2 5/8 I stopped where the frame widens up just before the release lever, or do i go all the way to where the breach is?

I'm pretty sure you've got a Model 1915, or 915. If you go to the Numrich Gun Parts site and pull up the Savage/Stevens list (it's a long one) you'll eventually get to the 915/1915/311 breakdowns, and I'm pretty sure they detail which model had what tang length.

2 5/8 tang is stevens model 315
Numrichs does list some parts for it too.

Take a look at Bob's Gun Parts (www.gun-parts.com/savagestocks) for a breakdown of the various Savage/Springfield/Stevens models and their tang lengths.

The barrels cleaned up a-lot, with running it under a wire brush (file card). They almost shined up as if I was rust bluing it. There is minor pitting about 1/2 way down the barrels... I don't know a lot about scatter guns and how touchy the barrels are. Take a look and tell me what you guys think.
Oh, side note.. I cleaned up the frame (got unknown years of grime off) looks better now. Im going to polish it to a high sheen, but Im leaving the years of scaring (I don't want to remove any markings). Then Im going to scrub the barrels down and touch them up... or just re do the darn things... rust bluing. That depends on how the "touch up" looks. Now.. if you say the conditions of the barrels look safe to pop a few off... why, by all means.. Im shooting a double! That will be a first.

If it was me I'd get some x-rays or some such to check to see if there pitting on the INSIDE in about the same place as the Outside and see if any cracks show up.
Like I said once in another thread-I had a heavy weapon blow up on me once-so perhaps I am extra cautious. |

Well.. I do work at an airfield.. and we do X-Ray aircraft... but we are talking about a "firearm part" on an airport. And I don't think the mgt. would approve any way. Looks like it will be a static display.. bring on the wall trophy! (I'll pull the firing pins before I return it to the owner).

I finished prepping the barrel for rust bluing... sand blasted the pitted spots... no holes, if that makes anyone all warm and fuzzy! When I finish the outside of the barrels and scrub the inside Ill check for pitting. If I don't get to test fire a double.. I'll live,... in agony!

For what it's worth, I've got one of those things in 16ga, and a friend has one in 12 gauge. Both shotguns look to be in pretty much the same condition as yours. My 16ga. has bounced all over Alaska from Point Barrow to Sitka since long before WW2 (I know the original owner's family), and quite frankly it looks awful - stock with long ago repaired cracks, bare gray metal - I suppose it was blued once upon a time, but like its Model 311 descendant it's built like a tank and just keeps on ticking. Reckon it must have some Timex genes or something.

Saw a steel firing pin off a 90mm recoiless rifle. It had cracked right in half during the first round firing. I pulled the jacking handle on an M-60 and it cracked and it broke off. Happened the same day it was -15F. Up around Ft Greely (yeah I know I spelt it wrong). |

Ad long as headspace is tight and the barrels interior is in good shape it will shoot safely.

, JLA a professional gunsmith, takes time out of his day, to chat, give feedback (weather bad or good), and is giving helpful information. Don't get me wrong, its not just JLA, goofy, and the lot of gun smiths out there, but other interested firearm enthusiast, all take time to give responsible input and make sure we are doing things correctly .. Im sure they are here to enjoy our and their hobbies as well. Why come to a firearm related web site if your interested in geology? Unless your against using dirt as a back stop.![]()
