Canadian spy accessed US,UK, Australian intelligence for Russia

A CANADIAN naval officer has admitted spying for Russia and selling intelligence gained by Australia and other countries.

Jeffrey Paul Delisle, 41, pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching Canada's Security of Information Act and also a breach of trust offence while working at a Halifax naval base.

He admitted selling highly classified intelligence gathered by the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia to Russian agents when he appeared in the Novia Scotia Provincial court on Wednesday, The Globe and Mail reports.

The sub-lieutenant had access to signals intelligence produced by the US National Security Agency, Britain's Government Communications Headquarters, Canada's Communications Security Establishment, Australia's Defence Signals and New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau, collectively known as ECHELON or the Five Eyes.

He faces life imprisonment for the spying charges when he is sentenced in January.

His guilty plea means there will be no protracted court case which could have exposed intelligence secrets.

Delisle worked at a secure naval communications and intelligence centre.
