Default Hornady L-N-L - Which pawl adj. to make for downstroke indexing?

This press is new - I have had it about 6 weeks or so.

Anyway, on the downstroke, the press indexing often does not go far enough to the right (clockwise movement) so that detent ball in the shellholder clincks into place.

This is somewhat inconsistent. When the arm is released quickly, the indexing usually works well and most of the problem appears to ocurr during a slower release of the ram arm.

During the first week, I busted two pawls, so I'm more careful now if anything starts to jam.

According to Hornady Customer Service, "the starting point for the adjustement is to screw each indexing pawl down 100% and back it out 1.5 turns. If any additional adjustment is needed, move the pawl adjustment screw by 1/16th turn."

I have adjusted both pawls by more than 1/2 turn and the indexing on the downstroke does not appear to advance any further.

Question: Does the right pawl or left pawl adjust the indexing on the downstroke?

Thx..

Adjusting pawls on the LNL is a 1/8 turn increment process to accomplish correct indexing. To answer your question; Handle down/ram up is the right pawl. Handle up/ram down is the left pawl.

Keep in mind the adjusting screws are not so much raising and lowering the pawls, they are simply changing the angle of contact with the advancing wheel cogs.

Shoot me a PM if you are really stuck...

^^^ what he said

and to add some emphasis to the idea that the pawls need to be adjusted in very small increments, only a slight 1/8 turn can make a big difference... once you get it dialed in it will run very smoothly... the LNL is a great reloading machine and the best value in reloading imo, i hope you enjoy it...

btw, the customer service people at Hornady are extremely helpful, if you call them they will walk you through anything on the LNL, and send you new replacement parts if needed via 2 day mail...
