I have this musket, and would appreciate any comments or valuations.
1861 Kentucky (?) musket (no rifling) , made by Bown and Sons, Pittsburgh, PA Enterprise. Bore dia. is approx. .50. I acquired from family of original owner. Carried during civil war in battles in Mississippi (Corinth, Vicksburg, Tupelo, others). After the war the owner and this rifle traveled to Texas for a time during Reconstruction, and eventually returned to MS. It is in original condition (no replacement parts or restoration has been done )and is fireable. [IMG] [/IMG]

Welcome to TFF.
James Bown (1823-1901) was an Englishman whose Enterprise Gun Works dated 1848-1883. His guns were good serviceable quality and inexpensive. Although your gun may date to the Civil War period, I would have guessed a bit later. It obviously was made as a rifle, and if smooth bore may have been bored out, or just worn out. Here is a page from their 1876 catalog showing similar halfstocks. |
