Ear Protection for shooting - The Firearms Forum

What do you guys use? Disposable plugs or muffs? Ever consider NRR ratings?

Are muffs worth it? Seem like they would interfere with the stock on a rifle or shotgun...

I use ear plugs but not the cheap disposable ear plugs. I quit using muffs because they are too heavy.

I dont know the brand but they sure do the trick, in my opinion they protect my hearing more than muffs but Im sure the others have different views.I live on a 813 acre farm and I wasnt using any ear protection for a long time but now I do. My hearing is still alright.

I have been shooting with muffs since the 1970's. I don't think plugs are as effective and I don't like the feel of plugs in my ears.

I'd say your choice depends a lot upon the type of shooting/noise environment you plan to experience ! FWIW, I've used EAR Plugs (disposable foam single use type) for decades in a lot of high-noise environments like drifter drilling, etc with no complaints. >MW

I use a gel plug with a good set of muffs over the top anymore. I am tired of destroying my hearing.

( PS.. I work in an audio job.. and I can tell you that plugs are (can be) MUCH more effective than muffs ).

that said.. you can't compair a CHEAP, poor fitting low NRR plug to a high quality, high NRR, well fitting muff.

in the end.. CYA and use both...

you also have to lok at noise makeup.. freq involved and the actual NRR of the device you are using.. the class of noise.. also onset speed.. etc..

duration of exposure and exposure type, constant or intermittant..e tc.

lotsa variables other than looking at a number and checking fit.

I still have my Mickymouse ears from my flightline days. I think they work better than the cheap foamy plugs. If I need to get serious, I have molded earplugs that I had made for bike riding. Can't hear much of anything with those!

Ya the wife keeps on me about getting some muffs but seriously I have no problems with disposable plugs, they fit well and render me almost deaf when I got them in right.

Plugs. I have the good ones and the disposable. I keep a set in my range bag, one in my work truck, and one in my car. Just in case I'm in a hurry when I decide to shoot and just grab ammo instead of my range bag. I also carry a few disposable ones in my range bag too, for shooters who forget theirs and I feel sorry for them

I use these muffs. They work great except when I fire off my Marlin 1895 SBL 45/70 it knocks the batteries loose.
The plugs I use when I sleep. My wife snores like a Rhino but dont tell her I said that.

Plugs are not bad. My problem is if I don't protect my ears good they will ring and I don't like that so I double up.

I use both plugs and muffs. At the range you can pop off the muffs for rifle and the plugs work well. i use disposables only because i lose alot .But cya i've lost plenty of my hearing and it 's not a good thing.

THe more stuff I put on my head the more I feel like Im just playing a video game. I like good quality ear plugs. Once you got a hat on, my glasses, muffs, and a cigar, its just too much.
