Default Whats the most powerful scope?

Im asking as far as magnification. I want such scope for my .308. Id rather not have to deal with a spotting scope to look where my shots went to. Thanks for any info.

What ranges do you plan on shooting at? Is 42x magnification enough?

I have a bushnell elite 4200 with a 6x24 power range. It will let you see your shots at 100 yrds easy.

I'm assuming you are trying to see your shot holes at much farther than 100 yards, Sightron makes a 50 power scope. I think it would be very difficult to find a scope that will see the shot holes beyond 250-300 yards without paying a premium price.

March makes 60 and 80 power scopes, but you pay a pretty high premium for these scopes/

March has a 10-60x56mm you can have them boosted to 72x to.

One thing you need to remember is that with higher power not just the target is magnified. On the 1k line I have seen many guys that have 32x scope end up at 20x because of mirage.

They got em as high as 50X. But the higher the magnification value the closer your eye has to be to the scope. You ever been scope bit?

Wow I just looked, my Orion reflector telescope is 28x, or 70x when you switch to a smaller eye piece. 28x lets you clearly see craters on the moon in great detail. 70x lets you see the Galilean moons on Jupiter, and faintly see a blur of Saturns rings.

99% of the scopes I see at Quantico F-class matches are 5.5-22x56mm. The 10-60x March is for benchrest guys. Then not many of them crank it all the way up.

For what purpose? Hunting or target? Good for target won't be good for hunting; most of my hunting rifle have no more than 9x maximum. The one rifle I target shoot with is variable to 18x.

I bought a $49.00 spotting scope from harbor freight that does what I need at the range.

Where is march made? Expensive? I think 40x should be plenty. Now Im worried about the scope hitting my head like JLA mentioned. Its for a Savage .308 . The rifle recoils plenty. I put a limbsaver on it and it still leaves small bruises on my shoulder. Another question is that should I be concerned about getting my eye punched out somehow by the scope since you have to look closer into it. I think the scope would miss your eye because the ring around the front of the scope is wider than your eye.

Thanks

Well checked out the march scopes site and the high powered scopes are around 3k and I cant afford that now. I wouldnt spend that much on a rifle scope anyways. It was a 10-60x and that would of worked perfectly but the price shot me down.

Do you have a scope now?? If not get this if only shoot long range. Fixed power scope-
http://swfa.com/Sightron-36x42-SII-B...ope-P9178.aspx

For a good variable-
http://swfa.com/Sightron-10-50x60-SI...pe-P45301.aspx

Just know the 50 to 125 dollar spotting scope are basicaly junk. Look to spend 400 to 800 dollars for something useable atleast for 500 yards plus.

Go to SWFA and check out the scopeing scopes. Swift has a good body and eye peice but price can still run 650 to 800 dollars. Others way higher.

See what mead optics has on there pages.

Yes I have a 4-12x now on it made by Bushnell but Im alreading thinking about purchasing the sightron 10-50 on the link there. They seem more in the price range to me. I been looking over the sightrons as well and thats what Im going to purchase if the scope is a tough durable scope and is made in the US. What kind of rings would I need?

Sightrons are not made in the USA. They are made in Japan

It wont hit you in the eyeball.. It will wop you in the eye brow or on the bridge of the nose. Either way hurts, and the bridge of the nose will make you cry. Its about like getting punched, by suprise, by a very small hard fist, that can hit as hard as a full grown man.

thats crazy, I dont want to get hit in the head from shooting a long range scope even though I been in plenty of fights in my time on earth, but actually I did below my forehead where my 4-12 hit above my right eyebrow. Atleast it wont hit my eye. My .308 kicks, it throws my rest all over. I heard the military sniper schools start out with a .308 What do you think, is that really true, I was watching the military channel and they were saying something about sniper training with .308's? I would join the military like I mentioned before but like you might know from previous posts from me that I have titanium pins in my arm and yeah I am mad that I cant defend my country in a way which what I would love to
do by being a sniper. Oh well, Ill concentrate on the wildlife on the place over here at long ranges as well as target shooting.

Since your going to hunt too you may want to invest in some Tally QD rings so you can swap scopes for hunting and not loss anymore than a click or two to be back on target for range use.

rcairflr. Well with there scopes being made in japan they will at least be a over better quality than most out there and for waaay less money.

The military does indeed train with .308s. Rem 700s (M24) to be exact. The marine snipers usually get issued M40A1s or A5s, which is also a Rem 700 in a chassis system much like the AICS chassis, the A5 is a 20 " version of the 25" A1. Army uses the Rem 700 (M24), which is a McMillain or HS precision stocked heavy barreld rem 700, Navy uses the M14EBR (enhanced battel rifle version of the M14) and also M24s.

Long range sniper teams also use the M107 barrett .50 cal, the .416 barrett, The CheyTac platform, and the AICS .338 Lapua magnum. Scopes range from fixed 10X leupolds to variable power Nightforce optics up to 24X. All with mildot reticles. They think in Milradians, not MOA.. its the same but different.

Get you a good 4.5-14X or 6-18X, mildot reticle and start practicing and researching. You will learn the game very quickly and you can decide for yourself if you need more glass once you gain some experience. And do yourself a favor and put wehatever scope you decide on in a good mount. I am fond of the DNZ gamereaper mounts, and they do come in std and with MOA cant built in. Ask yourself what range you want to shoot and order accordingly. I personally would just get the MOA cant base. it still allows you to shoot 100 yds. just puts zero down on the bottom of the elevation adjustment so you have it all for shooting extended ranges.

I;m not sure what your point is. Gun Runner stated that he wanted a scope made in the USA, I stated that Sightron was not. Personally, I have 3 Sigtron scopes and any scopes I plan on purchasing in the future will be Sightrons, so you don't have to tell me about their quality, I already know.

He could ignore both of you, so keep it clean. OP stated in a later post he was looking for U.S. made, rcairflr stated his favorite brand, Sightrons, isn't U.S. made, it's Japanese made, which the OP might not want. No one made an opinion, only a statement.
