Default Anybody else given hunting?....

....For whatever reason?

I hunted like crazy when I was younger then one day I realized the hunting was just an excuse to mess around with guns.

What I really loved was messing with guns.

Plus.....I came to realize I just did not want to kill anything if it was not necessary.

DO NOT get me wrong....I am all for hunting and more power to you hunters!

But I personally feel like I have killed enough things in my life....It's enough, and I could happily live the rest of my days without ever having to kill another creature.

Not me, I live for Deer Hunting and I would never give it up. The excitement and the rush when that Big Buck steps out is incredible.

God put animals like Whitetail Deer on this planet for me to harvest and eat. I will continue to harvest them with a firearm as long as I am physically able.

I don't duck hunt anymore, to much work in my old age, but I still hunt grouse and pheasants when I find the time. Deer, I'll make time!

When I lived back East, I went fishing 4-5 days a week, sometimes every evening after work. When we came to Alaska, I started hunting more than fishing; probably due to the
quality of hunting between both places. Hunting was more social back east, get with the neighbors, drive out all the woodlots, kill a bunch of deer; argue & run from all the deputy game wardens; just on and on. In Alaska, its all about fresh meat; nobody has ever heard about people wearing florescent orange and the nearest game warden cop is over 250 miles away & the road is closed. I'll take Alaska for hunting hands down. Back East for fishing, cause there ain't no walleye in Alaska and nobody here uses fishing poles. Up here they use fish wheels, nets, traps, that sorta fishing; not as much fun but you catch way more fish in ALaska.

been running around the woods every day last couple weeks (well except about one or two days/week, I come home and refit/restock, shower, etc.) I'm lovin it right now; buck is in season as is bear, mountain kitties and small game/grouse.

So what do I see? an entire pod of elk, a few monster horn bastards. They know elk season is not until next month.

But can't ever give up hunting, it's just about being out in the woods for me as much as anything, as 99% of the time is spent walking around the mountains. So even if I go home empty handed (like last year), I walk away with a ton of impressive views, not to mention it's pretty good cardio runnin' up and down the cascades.

But if I'm successful, besides cool photos and stronger legs, I have food! and lots of it.

My favorite pastime used to be hog hunting with my ruger blackhawk 41 mag and second favorite was gator hunting (illegal) before I had better sense....well some would say I still dont have sense, but thats another issue. I havent hunted in over 14 years. I dont know if my back issues were the main factor in stopping but I can tell you I have less desire to kill animals than I used to. I imagine if I got out there and started back into it, I would probably start hunting again but I just never do. I used to have freezers slam full of hog meat. That I do miss.

time frame is a lil different.. but sounds familiar. Florida too.

Me and a buddy used to tear up the hogs.. had so much meat we would fill up 2 other guys freezers.

it got to the point where it wasn't the big deal going out and putting bait corn out.. or scouting water holes.. or going out at dark thirty to setup.. or even the shooting.

it , at least for me, became the piint of them hauling that massive pork chop out of the woods , hanging it , gutting and skinning it... then seperating out the cuts...

last time I really went hunting was 2010.. buddy and I each bagged a hog.. called it a day at noon, and the next 6 hours was messy.

went squirrel hunting a few times.. but lost the taste for gamey meat...

before that used to bird hunt.. but that got to be a chore too..

this was the weather this past week/weekend for me at the 'bear playground' I've been stomping. There's at least 3 bears in this area but can't catch 'em in the open yet.

missed this one by a matter of minutes, tried using the predator call but he wasn't buying it.

Can't wait until my boys are old enough to come along, all my buddies crap out every year and I'm always bouncing around by myself. Don't mind it too much but it's nice to hunt with a few people. Couldn't ever give it up, eyeing the weather right now, looks like I'm gonna be wet and covered in snow this week.

I used to live to hunt, but my sons never got into it. Hunted with guys I used to work with, but they were much younger than me and they'd hike ten miles in the mountains, wich is great for them - but quartering a 800 pound elk and packing it out that far made no sense to me. I don't think hunting alone is a great idea, so I gave that up. I loved goose hunting, but never found a way to cook them to the point they were edible, and killing anything I'm not gonna eat is a thing I won't do. I do love elk, venison and squirrel. Have a few antelope that cross my place, but too few to hunt.

Having said all of that - I fully back hunting and bless those who still hunt. I'm too old and busted up to start again.

If I had a need to hunt I can and would, But as I can afford plenty of food right now I hunt at Publix. But I have the skills if I need them.

I don't hunt as much as I used to and now its deer only. If I didn't want the meat I wouldn't do it. I like being in the woods alone but I don't care for the killing. I used to look forward to the kill but I guess we change as we get older or at least some of us do.

I haven't hunted as much as I would like in the past 8 years. Mainly deer huntin and squirrel. Typically don't care if I get one or not, just like goin. It is relaxin walkin round and just let yer mind kinda wonder off while enjoyin the woods.

I hope you're joking about a 1000 yard shot on an animal for sport. Stick to paper at that range.

Absodamnlutely true.

Everytime I slap a steak or some chops on the barbie I am aware that I am cooking pieces of an animal which was slaughtered and sold to me.
