Tried to post this in the Craftsman sub, but it said I don't have permission.
Anyway, I couldn't see paying $20 for a steel can so I made one. Outside Dim: 16 3/4"x 11 3/4"x8". All yellow pine 5/8" thick. Red oak stain. Finger jointed sides. Will hold about 60lbs of ammo. ![]() ![]()

I'd be interested also; keep wanting to build some more (have some surplus army ones) but don't have much time lately, all going towards work and sewing kit. Keep one full of 12g heavy stuff.
looks good!! I take it you have a dovetailing jig for your router? That's on my 'stuff to buy list'...

I do have a dt jig, but haven't used it in years. I prefer to handcut them (saw and chisel). Too much hassle to set up a jig for them unless you're making thousands of them. These are finger joints tho, which I make using a shopmade jig and a straight bit on the router table. |

would there be any benefit to running a small dowel down the finger joints to strengthen them?

That said, much depends on how well the joint is made. A loose fitting joint will of course be much weaker than a tight fitting one. Wood glue does not act as a gap filler. Some glue's such as epoxy or gorilla glue are gap fillers, but they come with their own set of problems. Hide glue, which has been around for a few thousand years, is one of the best glue's for woodwork ever invented, and in some applications (veneer for example) it is unsurpassed by even the best modern glues. It has many advantages, one of which is that it is easily repairable and can be reconstituted. It also does not 'squirm' like modern wood glues, and does not interfere with finishes. Sorry, I tend to ramble on sometimes. ![]() PS: If you're interested in Joinery, I'd suggest picking up a copy of "The Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery", by Gary Rogowski. Pretty nice Gunny. When we moved to Alaska in early 90s; I hauled a bunch of nice Chestnut beams & boards I had cut down from a barn beam that was hand hewn back in 1812. Only made guitars so far; must be the only guy around with Amer Chestnut geetars. I might start thinking about a ammo box.
Right now, I have a Knaack Job master chest # 36; I can fit 16 green ammo cans in it, so I have every caliber it's own ammo can, works ok I think, but a wood one would be much nicer. |

You did a nice job on that box. You are skilled. I myself have 50 or so ammo boxes (GI and Walmart plastic) to hold my hord. Not counting the sealed ammo cans.

Gunny,
You know, the problem is if ya make them too big, and they never are big enough, you better even not think about moving them. Reason why I went with green ammo cans inside big metal box was so I could pull cans out in an organized way. One of the locals in our community burnt his house down during an extreme cold spell. He had so much ammo everywheres, nobody could go near the place all night, until the fire burned itself out. Got me thinking about all the loose ammo I had in every cabinet, on every shelf, just everything I had forgotten about here and there. So I got 25 of those army ammo cans. I can get a few hundred rounds in every green ammo can and they seal tight. I got the Knaack job chest used for $100, it's 3 foot long and 2 foot wide & high and holds a bunch of ammo cans. At least now, I know where it's all at; still can't pick the thing up, ha ha. So I guess a smaller wood box is the ticket and much nicer to look at; great job ya did there. I guess I just need a an ammo bunker nx to the house. |
