Default Unknown Rimfire Cartridge

Hi All
I am trying to identify this rimfire cartridge. 40cal projectile with copper shell. Length is 1.5 inches and .5 inches at its widest. Head stamp is "U". I have attached photo. Are there any good reference books to help with identifications? I just inherited a large number of shells and need all the help that I can get.
Thanks
Mark

.41 Swiss (aka 10.3x38R Swiss Vetterli). Years ago, there were so many surplus Swiss Vetterli rifles imported here that American makers, including Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC or "U") made the ammuntion. UMC later bought Remington and the company became Remington-UMC. No .41 Swiss ammunition was made in the U.S. after WWII, and I suspect that round was made in the 1920's.

Thanks Jim!
Could you recommend any good reference books to help me with the other shells?
Thanks

"Cartridges of the World" is a place to start.

It appears that there are some cartridge collector forums
also.

Don't load us down but if you post a few at a time and with as good photos as that one, we will try to help. Don't forget to include headstamp data or pics.

BillM is right on - I have had that book for many years, and rely on it heavily.
