Default Hunting with 243

I have an opportunity to use my friends 243 caliber rifle, for a hunting trip I have coming up. I will be trying to get that HUGE Florida buck. I won't be shooting anything over 150 yards. I'm just wondering if anybody hunts with that caliber and how you like it. How high or low it OS at a 100 yards. I will definitely take it to the range before I go hunting with it. I believe it's a Winchester but could be a marlin not sure, I know its lever action with I think a 5 round magazine. Thanks!

It should work fine. A lever action with a mag they way you said it makes me think the mag is detatchable and if so probably a BLR.

I would use ballistic tip factory ammo and you are good to 300yrds point blank. If your shooting under 300 yrds do not compensate your good as long as you start off at 1 or 2 inches high at 100 yrds.

Just put the x in the pumper and trigger away. Let us know how you did.

Savage bolt is my hunting rifle. .243 is great for our Hill Country White Tails. I sight my guns about an inch high at 50 yards and they are "hunting" spot on , for me, at most any range to 200 yards.

Winchester Model 88 was chambered in .243 Win. I can think of no Marlin lever action rifles chambered in .243 Win.

A 6mm diameter, 100 gr projectile, moving at 2,700+ fps, fired out of a necked-down .308 piece of brass at ranges less than 150 yards should kill white-tailed deer quite will IF the projectile is placed where it will do the most good.

Be careful. Once you shoot it, you'll want one.

It's pretty flat shooting and packs quite a punch with little recoil. We will need a range report for sure.

I've heard of people using 87 gr. bullets. I prefer to use 100 or 105 gr. Nosler partition bullets and they work very well.

The Win Mod 88 in .243 is something Ive always wanted, but out of my price range, anyway the few that I've seen for auction are, I have a Mod 88 in .284, and it's an accurate rifle, a .243 Mod 88 might even be better,

At any rate the .243 is more than capable of doing the job, especially on those monster FLA deer, shot placement is always mentioned when someone is asking if a particulare cal. is enough gun, shot placement concern should be a given for any hunter, with any ethics at all, after large game, regardless of calibre or game in question,

shot placement is definitely always on the top of the list. The last thing I want to do is take up time following a blood trail, because of a lousy shot.
